hello all, I have a 2002 7.3l X with a serious issue now. coming back from our family property the brakes went soft and went straight to the floor. I was able to still stop, but it hardly stops. the issue started two day ago when I noticed my brakes pedal would stop normal then would drop and stop again. while driving in traffic I had to hit the brakes hard and the pedal was solid but the brakes stayed applied. I have to pump the brakes to get them unstuck and was able to drive off again.
now I have the problem that the brake pedal is almost no existent. I have times (1 in 10) that the pedal feels fine then slowly drops to the floor and I basically have to stand on the pedal to keep the truck stopped. I did notice there is a leak into the cab when I was checking the fuse. I need some insight what the problem can be. I have super low funds and can't just throw parts at it .
thanks in advance
all the fluid is at the right level, I did a power steering flush with ATF alittle over a month ago. there is no fluid on the ground either. when I get a chance I will Check to see if the fluid is foamy after use.
if that was failing, being that its on the other side of the hydroboost, would it leak into the cab?
I finally had a second to look at the truck for a moment and with the vehicle off the brakes are super spongey, and almost non existent. with the food on the pedal and start the truck the pedal does drop alittle.
- it is damn near impossible to get a half rotation out of the steering wheel with the food off the brake and the truck in park. the rpms also drop slightly when turning the steering wheel.
- with my foot on the brake pedal and trying to turn i can not turn the steering wheel.
- I also noticed when I step on the brake pedal there is a extremely faint hmm from the engine bay (probably the power steering pump)
- when inspecting the fluids both were at the right level. the fluid in the PS reservoir dropped onced I started the truck (but I did pump the brakes several times along with trying to move the steering wheel back and forth checking)
anyone? I was planning on working on my truck to replace the up pipes and do the non ebpv pedestal swap tomorrow anyways and will be doing that to get my mind to stop stressing about that issue. I have a line on a reman PS pump if i need to get that tomorrow as well.
just moved the truck to the driveway. steering wheel is hard as hell rotate. pushing brake pedal down and the wheel basically doesnt move. with the vehcile starting to roll the steering gets easier. so from that it sounds like the PS pump is out and if that is the case the hydro assist would be no help (I've I am reading everything I've seem correctly. as for the leaking in the cab (as mentioned above) wouldn' that be the hydroboost? if that is faulty I thought I read that they make for a hard brake pedal.
is all this true? I would like some insight from one of you gurus.
Honestly it sounds just like my ps pump before I replaced it. I don't think mine was as bad as yours but there were times suddenly the pedal went to the floor. I couldn't turn the wheel unless I revved up the RPM's. I replaced the pump, flushed everything and went with synthetic fluid.
1. would my steering be hard to turn while stoped if the master cylinder took a crap?
2. would my brakes be spongey all the way to the floor if my power steering pump went out?
edit:
didn' see your response. sorry ok well I guess I'll be purchasing a power steering pump asap and replacing that if that isn't the problem I guess my next step would be the master cylinder
That firewall leak is at the hydroboost. Real was to replace, but make sure you pay attention to the orientation of the clip at the pedal, to release the rod...also, get the plastic washers for the pressure lines at the boost....buddy went thru brake issues, ended up being the ABS module. If you exhausted your routes, he has abs module for X
after driving it alittle more I realised the PS pumpwas still working. so I decided to pull the trigger on a new master cylinder. replaced that just now and it seems to have been cured now. thank you everyone
