Just picked up a 96' F-250 5.8, 4x4 E4od with only 102k for dirt cheap as it did sit for a while and the owner has no idea what the vehicles past history is. I'm able to crank the engine via bypassing the starter solenoid. Nothing at the key most likely because of the shift indicators alignment, at the moment when in park the indicator shows drive, how do I adjust the indicator.
There is a little thumb wheel type adjuster (under the steering column) on it, but I'm not convinced that would cause your starting problem. If the little bracket is broken, Dorman makes a replacment.
Transmission range sensor (I think is the correct name) mounted on the driver side of the transmission acts as what used to be the neutral safety switch, but now has the added task of telling the ECU what gear is selected. Readjusting, or replacing it may fix your no start with the key. Fix the TRS first then adjust the indicator on the dash if necessary.

I was trying to prep the truck to be be run, by replacing old fluids and filter, tried to replace the fuel filter, and the filters retaining nipple snapped off in the fuel lined retaining clip. How do I get it out? Needle nose plyers aren't going to cut it
