got a '96 Bronco with the E4OD and I usually don't have any problem starting it up, but yesterday I tried to start it and I got nothing it didn't even try to spin the starter. So I jiggled the shift lever and then it started and I didn't have any more problems until today. Same thing nothing it wouldn't start so I jiggled the shift lever and still nothing. Then I took a screw driver and started it at the soilnoid and it started right up then I shut the key off and started it with the key no problems. Any ideas?
I don't think that is your NSS, b/c if it is falty or broke, you truck will not start no matter what you do until you fix it, and it also controls your reverse lights, so if you get it started again, try putting it in reverse and let someone tell you if the reverse lights come on or not, and if they do, then it's 100% not your NSS.
The E4OD doesn't have a neutral safety switch. It has a Manual Lever Position Sensor that does a LOT more than just feed power through to the start solenoid. Since you made mention of the trick of jiggling the shift lever you may have a mis-aligned MLPS or it could be that the shift lever just needs to be tightened up so that it puts the MLPS where its supposesd to be to start the truck. Is there a lot of slop in the shift lever if you don't actually move it from one gear to another? If so, it can be tightened up near the base of the column. Its one or two bolts. This would be the simple fix. If that doesn't work, try starting the truck in neutral. If it still doesn't work, you may need to replace the MLPS which is located on driver's side of the transmission near the midpoint.
tried to start it yesterday and it cranked and turned over but didn't fire right up like usual... it was kinda cold and I cranked it for about 5-6 seconds then I stopped for a second and went to crank it again and it wouldn't crank or nothing just a click click. I tried to jump it from the soilnoid on the fender but same thing just a click click. Is it my starter or maybe the soilnoid on the starter?
If it won't even crank when you short the terminals on the solenoid on the inner fender, make certain the battery has a decent charge and double check your connections at the starter and at the battery ground to the frame. Once you are certain these are ok, then move on to the starter.
My 94 F350 E4OD developed a problem where it wouldn't start in Park, only Neutral. The shift lever did seem a bit sloppy so I checked the 2 allen bolts connecting the lever at the base of the column, they were pretty loose. Tightened them up, problem solved.
