Hmm...don’t mean to confuse you. The Excursion steering box IS different than the 05 and later super duty trucks. Hence the new Ford box being $1200 for the Excursion, much more expensive than the approx $400 for a new Ford box for the 05 and later trucks.
My comment regarding aftermarket boxes was simply to give my experience regarding aftermarket boxes...so far the ones I’ve, and a couple other people I know, have tried have all had play right out of the box. That’s the reason I am thinking about getting a Ford steering box.
So does your Excursion use the same steering gear as a 99 to 04 F250 super duty? I thought all the Excursion's had the same front end as a 99 to 04 Super duty. So an 05 Excursion should be the same front end as a 04 super duty and should be the same steering gear part #. Also when I purchased my reman steering gear (I got a Red Head) the 05 and up rebuilt steering gears where the more expensive ones, the 99 to 04 rebuilt steering gears where a little cheaper. That was my experience a few years ago.

Yes, it uses the same box as the earlier trucks. The 05 Excursion is interesting, as it uses many things from the 99-04 trucks but also has several of the updates from the 05 model year. Unfortunately not in the suspension/steering department, among other areas. Yep, for a Redhead rebuilt box the 99-04 box is cheaper than the 05 and later box. But when buying a new box from Ford it’s the other way around...by a lot!

That is interesting thanks for clearing that up. I did price a Ford reman and IIRC it was about $700, I got the Red Head for about $350, and these are remans not New units. I will say after about 4 years the reman Red Head doesn't have any play. The opposite actually, its tight and has less "power assist" then the original. This is an 05 and up style and is different then yours. This is my experience FWIW.
The 05 Ex has leaf springs...and unfortunately the D50 axle (less beefy differential...everything else is the same as D60) from the early 99-01 trucks, not the D60 that the pickups got in 2002. The Excursion is really a combo of several years of trucks. Makes ordering parts a lot of fun, even at the dealership! I’ve had to help out parts guys sometimes.
Guys, Im ordering the the new Ford gear this morning. Those of you that have done the swap did you have any trouble getting the pitman arm removed from the old box? Ive watched some videos of the gear box swap and a couple of guys couldnt get the arm off. I can get a new one for 20 from rockauto.
Probably not a bad idea. I had no problem with mine, used a heavy duty pitman arm puller I got from Advance Auto. It’s not the one they normally carry, that one wouldn’t fit. I found one and they were able to order it for me.
It was this one, I think...but it was only about $30 when they got it for me. Can get it (Lisle 41970) elsewhere for $30
I had to beat the old one off with a 3lb maul. I would get a new one to have on hand just in case you need it or make sure a local place has one in stock. Nothing like having to put the job on hold while you wait for a new one to arrive.

Have not removed the trucks pitman arm yet but I have on other vehicles. You don't often see mentionened that while you tighten the pitman arm remover screw you are supposed to strike the head of the screw periodicallyas the remover puts tension on the arm. For me this method works well. Be ready to catch things and keep your face out of the way if it lets loose unexpectedly.
I happened to have the HD puller in my assortment of "stuff" and really
did not have too hard a time pulling the arm off even with the box out on
the floor. I think it did help that it was soaking in fluid for a few months.
So make up some Home Made penetrating fluid. ATF + Acetone or you can
buy some Kroil and spray it. You want to get the splines from the top side
and the big nut that holds it in place. Let it soak for a few says if you can
or hit it with the heat gun to encourage it a bit.
Once I got mine off I happened to have a willing instructor over at the school
where I did my A&P training, He was was the NDT class instructor. So they did
some testing on it and it came back as being good and not cracked.
I thought for sure that it would have some cracking. But no it did not.
I think my ideal rebuild of a box would be a trip to NDT to check the
sector shaft and the worm screw for any cracking. Not sure if they could
also do the metal ***** or just replacing the bunch.
Here is a diagram for everyone that has not seen the inside on the fear box.

Be sure to let us know what you think about the new box after you put it in and
how t holds up over time. I would guess that the first 18 months would tell you
how it holding up if you drive the truck daily.
BTW if you want to go by the book you ned to replace the 3 frame bolts and the
sector shaft nut. Myself I would not skip replacing the nut.
