1995 4.9L not reaching operating temp

Have a question, I just replaced the WP and TStat on the truck and now finding that it takes a very long time for the truck to come up to temp. Previously, it would come up to temp in a few minutes. Now, the needle barely enters the very edge of the actual temperature range over the same time/distance. Is it possible for new a thermostat to fail open? The one I put in was just your garden variety from Advance Autoparts.

All too common these days to have a brand new thermostat that is bad.

It is a pia, but you should check them in a pan of water on the stove with a thermometer before installing.

This is how you spell "Motorcraft"

Did you put in the same temperature rated T-Stat as the one you removed?

Why did you replace the thermostat initially? Do you still have it?

Maybe the temp sensor failed?

If you bought a Fail safe thermostat and it locked in the open position you will have to remove it to check and replace it again.

Thanks for the comments. I'll pick up a Motorcraft thermostat this week. I replaced it since I had a leaking WP and was right in there anyway and with all the coolant drained it seemed like a good idea at the time. In hindsight maybe not since the other one seemed to be working fine. I'll be sure to test the new one. I guess I could throw the one that's coming out in some hot water and see what happens. I talked to some guys at a shop and they suggested that it might have slipped when I installed it, but they said that usually when that happens the housing will crack when you tighten the bolts and so far as I can tell that didn't happen. I guess I'll know more when I pull it off.

Yep, it's a 195 DEG thermostat.

Sincerely appreciate that, been away from Fords for about 20 years, so go to know.

Usually never hurts to replace a thermostat, especially when your draining the coolant anyway....
