Question Thermostat?

Okay, so not ever having done a thermostat on my truck, where is it? How much is it? Where do I get one? and are there any particular sources for one? Oh yeah, and what temp do I want to get?

Here is a basic video
Many of us like the 200* Mishimoto, but it's your call. Search here for the Mishi thread, don't let the posts about the problems of them not fitting right scare you, from what I have read it's not an issue anymore.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...hermostat.html

I'm sure others will chime in but it's a pretty basic job unless you have an early build like me then it's an extra pita with the EBP sensor right there.

Whichever brand you choose, I would recommend boiling it on the stove first with a thermometer or infared temp gun to see exactly what opening temp is & fully open temp is. From my experience most tstats start to open 5° under their rated temp. Since most on here have unbelievably clean & free flowing coolant systems it's no surprise that your actual reading after install is in between opening & fully open temp.

My gates tstat is rated at 192. My opening temp is about 185 & fully opened at 191. I've yet to see my readings ever go past 194. Normally hangs out between 187-189.

So what are the benefits of a 200 deg vs a 192 deg? I know gas engines, learning diesels, but I always thought a lower temp thermostat is better.

Noooo.....diesels like heat. Remember they run on compression. 200* yeilds better fuel economy and a cleaner running engine. I run Mishimoto 200* t stat in both my 6.0.

I totally understand the logic, so you don't need to reiterate on my behalf... But I have to ask, by what logic did Ford/IH have to determine using a 190* thermostat? Especially being that the purpose behind moving to the 6.0 in the first place was to meet tighter federal smog requirements, why would they use a thermostat and design that would run less clean? It seems illogical to me... Unless maybe there's something I don't understand about what constitutes "smog"?

Just my personal preference, but i prefer the cooler 192 on a stock truck. The stock 6.0 heads are terrible & all have cracks. More heat will definitely help promote more cracks in them & open up the existing cracks more. Now if you're studded and have non stock heads with hardened valve seats & guides then you can argue the higher heat theory.

Me thinks you will find MANY, MANY of are still using stock heads with NO issues and using the 200* stat! Mine's been in for almost 2 years and I tow pretty heavy too! ( I do have studs tho)

And someone throws a wrench into it! LOL
Now I do not know what to do
I guess I will just leave it alone since it is fine now, and worry about it later, maybe when I stud this summer.

Well from a mechanics point of view, cracked heads = junk. There's many who say that cracks are fine & don't have any issues, this includes ford themselves. Will they seal up & hold compression with no issues? Sure they will. My point was that more heat = bigger cracks. I don't want to discourage anyone from using a 200° tstat. Simply adding factual information. More heat will definitely give better mpg, but more heat is 100% proven bad for oil & internal engine component wear. You just have to ask yourself if the mpg gain is worth it.

Very good points. I appreciate you pointing out this stuff. I wonder how much difference the 8 degrees really effects oil and engine wear? I would think that 8 degrees is not really that much.

I also have the 200F Mishimoto and running with no issues. I doubt 8 degrees will matter much myself. It seems the stock ones seem to have some trouble keeping the temp up, even new ones from my reading. My old one wouldn't get to 180F.

Yeah, I am thinking I am going to go with the 200 deg Mishimoto one. Do I have to get the one with the new housing, or can I re-use the factory housing? Also should I replace the upper radiator hose also?
