Tailgate lock key?

Never had to use my tail gate lock before, but I have a topper (canopy) now and would like to secure some gear occasionally. My truck is a 01 and the tail gate works great, but the lock doesn't. Definitely seems like I'm using the wrong key.

I bought the truck used and it only came with two keys, square style. I know in older days ford used a square and a round key. Square for ignition and doors, round for trunk.

Could this be my issue?

the tailgate lock should use the same key as the rest of the truck. It could be possible that the previous owner put a used tailgate on the truck and didn't swap out the lock.

Theres another user on here that has a very good writeup on an aftermarket tailgate lock that works with the button clicker. It locks and unlocks with your truck doors. You might want to check something like this out
Pop & Lock Power Tailgate Lock

I know that my 06 the door lock and the tailgate use the same lock
cylinder in both locations. You just have to change the arm on the lock
sometimes. So you may want to check and see if you can get a new
un-coded unit and have a locksmith set it up for you. Or if the locks
are starting to get tired you could replace the full set with a new matched set.
It's not too hard to do.

I just bought a used 2002 dually and the driver's door lock was messed up during an attempted break in. Is it possible to use the tailgate lock mechanism in the door to save from having two different locks on the truck? I'm not sure if I would ever need to use the gate lock.

That is what I did with my 06. The real kicker is I only have a driver door lock the rest are keyless. Dead batteries would suck with out a working key.
So I moved the tailgate lock to the driver door and and all is happy. I think it tool me about 30 minutes to swap the parts. You need a torx set. some
sockets and a extension for the ratchet. A flashlight and a magnet on a stick also helps. You end up removing the door handle with the lock from the door
and then pull the clip that holds the cylinder in the handle. Remove the E-clip and swap the arm with the one from the tailgate. While your in there
some white lithium grease on rub points to refresh them is a good idea. The tailgate is one place where I like to make sure that I have fresh grease
on the points because it really makes it easier to open.

One very good idea if you have access to a camera is take some photos of how the parts look before you take them apart. Makes it easy to go
back to reassemble.

The key sets are $$

Thanks guys!

I like the pop lock, but not thrilled on all the work it'd take. I'll see what the cost is on getting the cylinder re coded.
