2016 F150 Replacing BCM
Good afternoon gentlemen. I normally work on BMW and Mercedes, but have some limited experience with Forscan and on occasion wrench on some Domestic stuff...
Here is what I am facing:
The above mentioned truck is almost new (less than 5,000 miles) but was under water. It was under water up to almost the top of the engine. The PCM stayed dry, but everything else went under. I have diagnosed a bad BCM and likely a bad SRS module. Not sure what else until I get the new BCM in place as the entire truck is completely dead (no ignition, radio, interior lights, nothing). Not sure if this truck has another module for rear lights or something similar like Mercedes or "FRM / Footwel modules" like BMW.. but the BCM is a good start. And yes, the engine is clean, cranks over, has good compression, oil and fluids have been changed - NO, engine was NOT running when flooded.
So.. the owner is going to purchase a NEW BCM (from Ford). With my limited Ford-specific experience, and what I have found on-line, here are my questions:
1) Can I program the new BCM (from Ford) using only Forscan?
2) What issues am I going to face if I only have ONE key for this vehicle?
3) Is installing a used BCM possible using only Forscan? If so, what do I need besides the donar BCM?
4) It may be worth noting: THIS IS A MEXICAN truck (built for and sold in Mexico) - any issues that may cause?
5) At the end of the day.. is it any better to just purchase a clone IDS/VCM?
The existing BCM is COMPLETELY dead, so no ability to read out anything.
I am very well versed with the BMW computer tools, cable hacking, VW diagnostics, Mercedes STAR, etc... but Ford is not my area of normal work. So please excuse my lack of understanding here. Information regarding such a new vehicle seems very sparse online. I have not normally worked on many Fords, but given my electrical knowledge.. I am finding a LOT of work available in the area I live since very VERY few people understand anything electronic here.
P.S... I am awaiting account activation over on the Forscan forums as I planned to ask the same questions there (as well as obtain extended license).
-> Don't know, that is why I am here asking questions :-)
"Or buy it and have a dealer with the proper Ford equipment configure it"
-> It is already at my shop.
The nearest dealership capable of doing this is Mexico City, otherwise we would have to wait nearly 15-20 days leaving it at a closer dealership. Things here in Mexico are not like they are in the US lol.
According to the Forscan forums, AND THESE (ford-truck) forums, YES - you can configure a new BCM. In fact, you can configure a USED one as well. I just need to know the pre-requisites AND I need to know if it is possible with this year/model truck.
This was a water damaged truck and insurance already paid it off. It was purchased by a local scrap yard here and they now want to get it running considering how new the thing is.
Besides... these guys have SEVERAL more identical trucks just like this one. If I can fix this one, I will have the business of seven more. So yeah...

Buena suerte.

Is this similar to BMW, where we have flashing and coding... Writing the VIN and configuring the module is similar to coding - and does NOT replace the actual software on the BCM, it just writes the configuration parameters to the BCM - correct?
I can get the VIN if needed and look all the info up. As another option, I don't mind to pay for a 72 hour pass to the MotorCraftService.com service if needed.. but would I need any special hardware besides what I already have? In otherwords.. Is the "as built data" just a text file with the config params that I download and push to the BCM?
Finally.. what about the keys? We only have ONE key for this vehicle. Will the key need to be re-paired to the new BCM? And will I be required to obtain a second key for the pairing to work?
