Fuel Filter Help
Fuel Filter Help
I bought an '86 F150 4x4 with the 351W HO recently and I plan to go through this weekend and change all the fluids and filters and do all the general maintenance. I've never done a fuel filter before, but as I started looking into it, the procedure is not listed in the Haynes manual for carburated engines. I searched online and really couldn't turn up much more info. The truck has a holley 4bbl carb. Is the only fuel filter the bronze one in the float bowl? Autozone sold me an inline filter with male threades on one end and female on the other, is this designed to run in addition to the bronze filter or instead of it? If this filter has potentially not been changed in 30 years, if like to get a new one in it, but right now I'm confused. Any help is appreciated.
Make sure you identify what carb you have. The original Ford holley 4bbl is often replaced with a aftermarket holley which looks mainly the same, but has important differences, the fuel filter being one of them. Here's a original style 4180 Ford/Holley carb and it shows the little stubby gold screw in filter.
this doesn't really seem to apply to my truck. It states for use in conjunction with frame mounted fuel pump, but my truck does not have a frame mounted fuel pump. The only fuel pump I can find is the mechanical fuel pump next to the oil filter. I traced the fuel lines from both tanks all the way to the carburetor and didn't find any fuel filter at all. Is it possible that the only filter on this truck is the one inside the carburetor?

The model number is stamped into the airhorn. Take the air cleaner off and look to the right of the threaded stud sticking up that holds the air cleaner.
If you have a large pipe coming off the top of the carb front and rear, then you have some sort of original type carb.

Yup that is all they need any thing that gets through that the carb can digest with no issues..
There are two fuel filter styles that will screw into the 4180 and the one you want depends on what kind of fuel line you have running up to your carburetor.
Many of these came stock with a metal hard line that threads onto the fuel filter and if you still have it you'll need the fuel filter that's threaded on both ends.
But if you have rubber fuel hose running up to your carb you'll need this one, a NAPA 3019. Don't know anything about the parts vendor, this was just the first google hit.
