So I just bought a new 2017 F250 XLT with 20 miles on it,
put 280 miles on it, and next thing i heard something clicking/rapping underneath and next it just acted like it was in neutral, had to be towed and it would roll backwards in park, won’t engage into drive or reverse! It will shift in each but does not drive, what the heck could it be? Crazy
Oh man that is not good. Is this a gas or diesel and 2 or 4wd? Not knowing the circumstances but I did hear of someone (Epic Cowlick) pulling his RV in 4x4 Low and it popped and he was unable to move. (He has a video on YouTube on it) Another vehicle pulled it forward slightly which apparently relieved pressure on the transfer case and it allowed him to shift into 2WD and from that point he was able to move. Point tell you that was maybe there is something to do with the transfer case.
If it's a 4x4 and you can tell that it is shifting through the gears but it doesn't move then it's probably the transfer case. I had an '81 F-150 3 speed w/OD that did what you are describing and ended up having a worn shift fork in transfer case. Luckily you have a warranty.
Hey machmedic
its a gasser it was in two wheel drive when it happened
hopefully it’s something stupid and not the transmission I will be out a week or two if it is I️ will bet

That (hopefully) does sound like a possible U-Joint but if the driveshaft dropped, it would have been fairly obvious. Hope the best for you.

Bingo, there was a recall for the 6.2 6R100 transmissions, the parking pawl was defective as the alloy Ford used was too weak.

I bet your problem is related to that.
The recall seemed to be only related to holding the truck in park. Also, his truck might be new enough build (post 4/1/17) to have the fix installed from the factory.
