My 86 F150 4x4 appears to be unable to shift out of neutral. Nothing happens when you shift into 2 or 4 Hi under any circumstances, and I get a grinding noise if I try to shift into 4L with the engine running and trans in drive. I'm pretty sure the trans is still operational (since it makes that wonderful rattling/grinding sound of a spinning automatic shifted into park at speed when you try to shift it into park after sitting there in drive and not going anywhere.). Anyone have any ideas? It's a 302 w/ AOD, and the transfer case is an NP208F.
Have you shifted the transfer case via the lever directly attached to the case, where the linkage attaches? It could have jarred loose or stripped the slot in the arm.
you shouldn't be switching from N to 4lo or 4high with the tranny in drive.. it just won't happen. put it into 2wd with the truck off, and see if it works then.
We took the thing out this past week and discovered the following:
In 4 Low, which we COULD force it into out of the truck, works.
2 and 4 Hi did NOT. Turning the input make the appropriate outputs turn, but any pressure or resistance on the outputs would result in the thing skipping/slipping and the outputs would not rotate. It's dead, a salvage unit is going in tonight.
