How to determine injector type?

Bare with me, I'm still new to the diesel side of things. My 95 PSD had some performance items added to it before I purchased it including a GearHead(brand name?) 6 position digital switch. The info I got for the switch settings are:
1. Stock
2. High idle
3. Whisper Mode
4. 25HP towing
5. 40HP towing
6. 80HP Performance

Setting 6 is will let out a decent amount of black smoke when my foot is into it.

Is it possible the injectors have been changed to a higher cc or is this possible with stock injectors? If they are not stock, anyway to tell - such as markings on the injectors?

- I don't have a way to contact the owner that installed these things.

It all depends on what you mean by a decent amount of smoke.
The older stock trucks really don't smoke much at all, but then again I am used to trucks that can block out the street (which I don't like or suggest doing.)

As for what the actual injectors are you really won't be able to tell without taking them apart (which you yourself cannot do) and inspect and measure some parts.

Thanks for the reply. It will leave an intersection pretty clouded over if there is no wind. Enough to probably make visibility limited to those directly behind me. Still nothing like a diesel with a 140hp setting and injectors would do.

I'm not having any injector issues but I was curious what to do if I needed replacements. It sounds like when that time comes to send them out so they can be determined.

Thumbs up

GH reburned my TS6 chip also, much better tunes.

Between 'street' and 'all out' mine will belch black smoke on the 'all out', 'street' is more of a haze. My guess it just has stronger bottom end fueling to help light the turbocharger a bit quicker. I did not drive around much in that mode.

Currently, I am puttputting around in 'tow up to 10k' mode as my uppipes leak. Last thing I need is a melt down.

GH also did the tuning on my old 6.4 before it was wrecked. HUGE difference compared to the factory SCT stuff. I mean HUGE.

Boost leak, exhaust leak perhaps? Do a boost leak (check the stickies for the DIY tool) and check your up pipes for any signs of exhaust leaks.

I probably should’ve phrased my question a little clearer. I’m not having any problems as really it only smokes in 80hp mode which is understandable. I’m just trying to figure out if I have stock or higher cc injectors as I don’t know the full previous history of my truck. I was asking about smoke in performance mode because I’m not sure if stock injectors would do this?

That’s good to hear GH has good stuff. I seem to like the tunes except “whisper mode” as it’s just as loud as stock.

I opted not to go with 'Whisper Mode' as I would never use it. Mine are -

Max tow to truck limit
Tow to 10k/econ
High idle
Anti-theft
Street
All-out

I averaged nearly the same economy between a few fuel ups (both tanks, same style driving) with the Econ as Street. I mean within a few tenths of a mile per gallon. All in how you drive it. Keep your foot off the floor basically. Wish I could tell you the power gains on the chip from GH, but with stock injectors I have heard 60-80rwhp is about it due to stock injector size.

So if these dyno around 180rwhp/320rwtq, it should give you an idea. Air intake and full exhaust gains about 35rwhp I was told. I guess if you strap your truck to a dyno and make mid 300s to the wheels, you will know you do not have stock injectors.

Hope it helps.

Upgraded injectors would have been a huge selling point, so if the dude didn't say anything about it, I would hazard to guess they're stock.

Could you contact GH to see if they put stock-injector or upgraded-injector tunes on the chip? You'd probably have to pull the chip to get a serial number but that's a heck of a lot easier than pulling injectors LOL

That's a great idea, I'll have to look into that route. I don't want to pull injectors unless I have to!
