V10 E4OD on a 460 : possible ?

I found some similar threads but nobody ever answered directly ....


I have a 1996 460 ( 7,5L ) in my E350 , the tranny starts to act on me .....


Id like to know if a more recent 6 speed E4OD would fit on my 460


Is the bell housing bolt pattern the same ?
( I know I would have to get a special ECM harness converter )

What is a 6 speed E4OD? Every E4OD that I'm aware of is a four speed.

Anything is possible with enough time and money. The bellhousing bolt pattern is not even close. You will need a custom adapter plate, and that's not going to be cheap.

Thanks Mark,

Ill get my 4 speed rebuilt then .....I would have like to get more speed ...

Maybe the designation letters are not right but the newer OD tranny has 6 speed....

The newer six speed automatic is called the 6R140. And it won't bolt to a 460, either.

Thanks Mark,

Ill either rebuild my E4OD with HD components , and rebuild my 460 to 400 hp at same time

or then , if feasible ( $$$) , transplant a 6.2L + 6R140 in the Class C ....
I like the way these 6R140 work ,,,


what do you think of this project ....great or a no-no ?
I`m not rich , just a good handymecanic ;-)


the harness should be the biggest problem ,,,

It can be done. I expect it will take A LOT of work, and A LOT of cash. It certainly isn't a bolt in project.

I guess ill abandon .....

the rebuilt 460 will give plenty of power ...

the E4OD has a major step between 3rd & 4th gear
I have 4:10 ratio....when I climb i take the OD out , it gains lots of RPM

I would have like the 6 speed for better transition between gears .....

but $$$$ ,;-(

+1 on the gear vendor overdrive. This will solve your problem for a lot less money. You will be very unlikely to achieve 400 hp on a speed density efi 460. Stick with what you have, and cut out the air horns, open up the exhaust ports a little, and go through the basics. Plugs, wires, fuel filter, and fresh fluids. A 400hp motor home will only create more problems. Your stock engine should produce about 240. With a little head work, and my other recommendations, you might see 280.
