Question 460 install to excursion???

Since I totaled my X in Dec. I have been lookin for another.........I located one with a blown motor(V-10),and I have a 460 at the machine shop now getting rebuilt and hopped up!!!

COULD the 460 be bolted into the vacant V-10 slot?? Will the tranny bolt up? I have ALREADY invested into the 460 (514CI) and don't really want to pony up the funds for a reman V-10................

Just want to see if this MIGHT be a way to go!!!

What transmission do you have? Do you have the E4OD the 7.3s came with?

Excursions never came with an E4OD. They had the 4R100 with the V10. The bolt pattern on a V10 is different than that on a 460. The trans will not bolt up. You could get an E4OD from a 460, which would bolt right into that slot. You'll need an aftermarket controller, the stock one isn't going to be able to work with an E4OD.

My mistake. I thought I had read somewhere that the 4 speed automatic behind the 7.3s was the E4OD. Does advance adapters or anybody make a different bellhousing to bolt a 460 to a 4R100.

Are the E4OD and 4R100 similar at all?

Neat idea. As to whether or not you CAN do it, sure you can. If you have access to the right tools and equipment and the ability to fabricate the mounts / adapters you may need. The real question is SHOULD you you do it. If you are looking to save money by using an existing engine, I would have to look at that real cose and see if you would actually save anything. If you are looking to have something unique and be able to say, "Guys, come here and check this out", then by all means, go for it.

Years ago, me and a buddy stuffed Ford 302 and a C4 tranny in an old Toyota 4x4 pickup using a kit from advance adapters. Now that was cool.

Years ago it might have been possible and worth it to try out. However with today's computer controlled everything, I wouldn't bother unless you really don't need this truck running any time soon. You'll need the entire electrical system from the 460, plus hte trans, the trans electrical system, custom fabbed engine mounts and tranny mount, plus x-member for the new trans probably custom built. Sure I can drop a random 305 into my 86 camero. However there's no way I would try to replace the 6.0 in my excursion with the new 6.4, which I got to tinker with yesterday and is very sexy mind you.

As Jay, Mark, and the rest of the boys suggested: unless you're looking for a serious project, I'd just rebuild the blown V10, maybe beef up the trans and let that be that.

The V10 is a stronger, more fuel efficent motor with more potential than a 460. The 460 is a great motor, but the trouble you would go through to retro-fit it into the X wouldn't be worth it.

Now if you were talking about an obs 97 F250/350 you probably wouldn't find much resistance there as it should be a relatively simple swap.

I have a 460 in my 93 F-250 (for sale) and it kind of feels like a dog compaired to my Excursion with the V-10 AND gets about 2 mpg worse pulling the same load.

Ya but the question is what motor has more aftermarket potential? The 6.8 or the 7.5?

Probably about the same since V10s can use pretty much anything that can be bolted to a 4.6 or 5.4. The even share the same pistons.

They are VERY similar. The 4R100 is an evolution of the E4OD.

The changes from E4OD to 4R100 were the addition of speed sensors, making many of the internals stronger, and changing the case to mate to the modular engines instead of the 460.

I really doubt the V-10 has more power and torque than my 460 (514) and I NEVER once worried about fuel milage when I bought my X the first time!!!

This was just a thought I really appricate all the input!! I may look into getting a reman V-10 IF I decide to get the X anyway!!!!
