This is true. A dirty intake will cause a partial vacuum in the chamber on the intake stroke, which can tend to pull oil past the rings. And I'd imagine it'll use a little more with the synthetic, since it has more of a tendency to seep past things anyway. That's a good trait for oil, but it makes it a little harder to contain.
