Preventitive replacement items / high mileage

A question ive wondered about.. I do not tow and have 220,000 miles on the X. Has anyone here ever replaced or serviced their driveshaft and related hardware as a preventitve measure? Like fuel pumps, altenators and such or do we consider them wait until they fail and strand us in the middle of nowhere items? I see so many pickups om the side of the road with failed drivelines... Of course assuming money is a concern....thanx

How long have you owned it? If you just got it with 220K, then there are plenty of recommendations on some preventative maintenance. What year, motor and drive train do you have...and then we can go from there. Driveshaft I would not list as high on the list of things to maintain...but that depends on your answers to the above questions. i probably do things a little different, but my drive shaft had a vibration, so when it was re-balanced I also had all the u-joints replaced. So now I know when they were replaced and what they have been thru.

I’ ve owned it since 60 thousand. I thought that info was next to our name but...? 2000 xlt v10 4r100 yes of course thre are many things i would do... speaking of the driveline while driving the ride is smooth but on a recent trip i rode in the back and it had a mild vibration and i thought what the...? I yelled at my daughter why didnt she ever tell me? You know kids...For now the kids are grown and the wife just drives it to the store and back..Its mostly retired... No more trips .. ect. because of time , kids in college and bills the X has been neglected for a few years and a few more to go.Only asic minor stuff needs to be done.. Mostly the things i mentioned.Except for pinging ..aha..(i just use mid grade fuel) i just worry about the fuel pump (no obvious symptoms) and the altenator(works fine, havent checked) and maybe the driveline.. just wondering if anyone else has done it .. thanks

Then the answer is yep, I did it all the time when I first got my EX, but really haven't done much lately since whatever was broke got fixed or replaced. I do still have parts or replacement parts for stuff that I haven't got to yet, but are not a problem right now. I have valve cover gaskets, glow plugs, injector o-rings, oil cooler rebuild kit, etc. Stuff you don't have to worry about with the V-10, but it's all sitting in a tool box ready to go.

I replaced my u-joints when I first acquired mine, and then never touched them again. Probably should have, between the insane abuse of boost launches and playing in the mud and surviving Houston floods.... However they were still functioning normally at the time of her death. Just had the driveshafts out a few weeks ago with Razzi, plenty of movement but not sloppy or loose by any means.

If anything, make sure your brakes and hardlines aren't secretly rusting on you, and that your master cylinder is in good shape. Trust me...

Driveline maintance:

1. Replace or grease ujoints.
2. If yours has a double cardan joint then rebuild it
3 check the lateral play in the slip yoke, replace as required.
4. Replace the rubber boot that keeps grit out of the splines.
5. Inspect shaft for any dents, have it re-tubed if there are any.
6. Check the balance weight and make sure it hasn't been knocked off
7. Lastly, torque all the fasteners to factory spec.

I like to paint my driveshaft as it makes checking for dents or damage a quick glance rather then taking it off one fully inspecting it. ( a medium grey color tends to show impact marks or grease leaking better then black )

Edit...... having a driveline shop rebalance your driveshaft is relatively inexpensive and worth doing if you have a slight vibe. ( a good shop will balance it better then ford did )

A preventive maintaince item that will park you on the side of the road is your cooling system.

Replace the serpentine belt
Tensionor and idler pulley

When the bearing goes in either one of those you are parked.
Rockauto sells a motorcraft kit that contains all 3 for $100 bucks.

While you have all that apart a new thermostat and fan clutch isn't a horrible idea either. If you do change the thermostat now is the time to back flush your cooling system and replace the upper and lower radiator hoses.

x2 on pirate's view. Cooling system\belt\tensioner will leave you stranded. Driveline failure will give signs before failure, usually vibrations or noise. I had a slight vibration in mine and a squeak I could only hear while right next to a building (think drive thru). Replaced all u joints, re-balanced drive shaft, now all good!
