So my truck didn't come with the factory Nav. No big deal, I didn't need it and it wasn't a deal breaker for me. I use my phone. My old truck had Nav and I only liked it because I could visually see where I was on a map. Don't need it, but it would be neat to have. The truck did come with Sync 3 and the other fancy features. So I started thinking that with all the extra mods one can do with these trucks, it can't be hard. Given that you can add the climate control screen to Sync, Nav should be doable. Only thing I've found thus far is from a company called 4D Tech and it's a kit that includes a factory Ford APIN equipped with Nav. Seems like truly plug and play. I even watched their video on YouTube and in 9 minutes he had swapped the unit out in his '17 F150 and had the Factory Sync 3 Nav. Only issue seems to be it's quite expensive. Kit costs $1,299 - but you can get $100 back if you send your old module back to them.
Has anyone heard of this? I'm going to talk to my parts and service department next week and see what their take is. For the cost of $1,200 it seems a bit extreme for a "convenience" feature. It's a cool idea but not seeing much other info out there, I figured I would ask here!
From what I've read here, factory nav is unable to be updated at this time. I also saw a couple of guys posts that roads that have been built in their areas for quite some time don't show on the factory navigation. It seems that SYNC updates do not include navigation updates.
If so, I sure wouldn't pay $1200 beans for something that will be stuck in time and never or very seldom be updated.

Poncho - good point. I did some further reading and see that maps aren't being updated...which seems to be pretty crazy to me.
Jim - I use an iPhone but I don't use Apple Maps. CarPlay won't let me use Waze.
Steve - that's interesting. It's literally the same process as the 4D Tech process, but 300 bucks less. Though if they aren't releasing map updates then it's really not worth it!
I hate to say it, but even Apple maps would be streets ahead (see what I did there?) of any OEM Nav option. I am honestly surprised it is still even an option in this day in time....
I've been well out of my service area, no roaming etc., and google maps worked all the time. I think its a satellite thing, idk, could be wrong, but a never had a problem from state to state.
Only problem that I’ve run in to is if you don’t have cell service google maps or Apple are useless.
Thats incorrect. I use Google Maps on an old Android phone all the time. It has no data connection. You just need to download the maps for the area, state, country, whatever beforehand and you'll always have an up to date GPS mapping app.

and it seems to me that this technology could and probably will relagate factory nav systems to the same; "remember when" factory radios offered cassette players as an option.

What you saw and read about the kit from 4D Tech is what one has to do in order to add factory navigation and yes, that price seems about right but you may be able to do it for a few dollars less from other vendors who are offering the same type of kit.
I`d be surprised if the price for the parts at your dealer would be any cheaper so let us know.
