A while back I bought a nice chrome plated step bumper for my 75 F-150.
When Stella came home from the body shop with her fresh new coat of
paint, I tried to mount it. OOPS !! Stella's frame rails are 37" apart.
The shiny chrome replacement is several inches narrower.
Any suggestions? Her latest pictures are still in the camera.
I'd bet it's set up for a highboy (or Chevy), 34" rails instead of 37 1/2". You MIGHT be able to flip the brackets side-side and make it fit, some aftermarket stuff was like that, they punched the holes at 35 1/2", then used 1 1/2" L-brackets so it could fit Chevy/Narrow Ford, or Wide Ford/Dodge with 1 bumper.
I took pictures of the chrome step bumper in the bed of my pickup.
I'll send it when it's processed. Who makes the adaptor brackets
for my 37 1/2" frame rails.
I put a Chevy step bumper on my '79 cause it's what I had. Took some 1-1/2 x 3 X 1/4" wall box tubing and drilled the holes in it to match the bumper and ford bumper brackets. After it was all bolted up I welded the box tubing to the bumper. Came out pretty good and the Chevy bumper actually lined up pretty good on the Ford

Who makes the adaptor brackets for my 37 1/2" frame rails. No one that I'm aware of.
1973/79 F100/350 Stylesides: TWO different step bumpers, TWO different types of step bumper bumper brackets.
This has to do with TWO different widths between the inner frame rails behind the cab:
33 1/2" width between the inner frame rails: 1973/77 F250 4WD (High Boys); 1973/79 F350 Regular Cabs on the 140" wheelbase.
37 1/2" width between the inner frame rails: 1973/79 F100 2WD/4WD & F250 2WD & F350 (except as noted above); 1975/79 F150 2WD/4WD; 1977/79 F250 4WD (not High Boys); 1979 F350 4WD
Note: The correct right & left inner 37 1/2" step bumper brackets are the same, but the 37 1/2" right outer and left outer step bumper brackets are specific.
THEREFORE: I'm kind of SOL. I will still proceed to process the pictures
taken today and post them here. It's doubtful that I will find
the correct chrome plated step bumper at a good price.
I paid only $75. for the wrong one.
That's either and aftermarket bumper or a square body GM truck rear bumper. And the frame on a GM truck is narrower then it is on the Ford. So there is your problem.
