The 7.3 idi will be a real turd when pulling a 48ft trailer, even with a turbo.
Not really my truck has 2 transmissions,a BW T18 main, and a Spicer 6041 auxiliary. The aux has LL=2.14:1,L=1.14:1,D=1:1,OD=0.86:1.I can split each gear in main box 3 times and have a total of 16 gears and 4 gears in reverse...........and I can tow at highway speed loaded in OD.
Chris
Have you considered a 4bt Cummins? With a few mods they can make 300hp and 600 ft lb of torque and still be reliable. It takes some a lot more work to get a 7.3 idi to that level.

Hello, I can't put in a 4 cylinder cummins because none where ever installed in ford trucks. That is an industrial engine not automotive.I am moving to west coast somewhere, and the 460 will never pass the smog deal ect............. so I can convert to a factory diesel that is exempt up to 1997 and register as a diesel powered truck. But it must be a engine = or newer in year to the truck and of 3/4 or one ton rated truck that was installed from the factory to be legal.5.9 cummins is to long and I am not dealing with a powerstroke conversion at this point in my life and I have to modify the oil pans on any engine to clear the steering.

There were plenty of 4BT Cummins engines in automotive applications, mostly delivery trucks. They also came with a variety of bellhousing adapters, so you could get lucky and find one with a Ford bellhousing. This should get you past the automotive engine issue, though I can't say for sure since I don't have experience with CA emissions.

Yes, I get all of that but no 4bt in a 3/4 ton or one ton factory. The diesel must come from a truck of the same weight rating or one class below =F250 or F350 chassis. And if later I would like a better engine don't powerstrokes bolt in where an idi was.
Chris
Yes, Powerstrokes have the same bellhousing pattern as an IDI, believe it's an old IHC truck pattern, same as a 404/446 gas truck motor? (not sure if it's the same as a 304/345/392 or not, don't know that side of IHC stuff very well). IIRC, they used 435's behind the 6.9/7.3's, not T19's, can you bolt a T19 to a 435 bellhousing, or will you have to change to a 435?
Hello, the front trans in my truck is a T18 and that is staying. The low 1st is nice for maneuvering with a trailer at the drag strip.I all ready have the aluminum 6.9 bellhousing for the 4spd. I can also compound 1st gear as low as 13.5:1 with the spicer.
