Welcome bil. I agree that that is what the fan is supposed to do except for the part where it never did that before. There is a clutch there but it should not suddenly change unless conditions change Has there been a recent change in conditions?

Mine has always done it. I crest the hill and it stops after about a minute.

How fast does it cycle on and off? I replaced my belt a while back with one from NAPA. Had the same thing, pulling a load it would cycle pretty fast like every other second, but not fully turn off, just pitch change. Put the oem belt back on problem went away. I measured the two out, the NAPA belt was about 5mm longer and a little thicker than OEM, I took it back, they said to change out the idler pulley. Mine probably needs it but couldn't convince myself of it, when the new OEM belt I put on doesn't have any problems either. Something to do with the NAPA belt caused my cycling. Point, check your belt and idler tension pulley

My belt is Ford and the tensioner has been replaced. Yeah, it just cycles on and off while it's doing it but will go off when done. I've heard of people removing shims from the clutch to make it better, but I only tow about once a year up a grade big enough to do it.

Welcome Bill, go to the local wally world and perform the following task. Get a big bottle of engine cleaner. Pull you grill and soak her down. Then go behind the radiator and flush her out. These babies get alot of stuff stuck in them. I pulled my radiator but it depends on your skills. The reason she cycles is because the underhood temp is high enouph to heat the fan coil and engage but not hot enouph to overheat the engine. Do the bug screen mod, go to home depo lowes whatever and buy the 5 dollar roll of sunscreen and install behind the grill any way you want. Keeps the birds out and the bigger bugs from reclogging the radiator.
