Hello,I am looking for the actual length of the engine without the flywheel housing.Front of engine to back of the crank, and or with a ford 460 trans adapter.
I am trying to decide what diesel will fit 5.9 cummins or option b is 7.3idi.I can't move my transmission rearward at all because of my spicer auxiliary and drive shaft that connects the transmissions,shifters,ect........
Chris
Unfortunately I can't measure the 12v in mine until tomorrow. Mine ended up being heavily customized but I installed the engine with the transmission and tcase in the factory location. The tradeoff was that I had to remove the driven fan and hub to make up the length. I ended up with dual electric pusher fans but have yet to have the engine ever get close to needing them so far. My 1st gen cummins isn't cranked up or anything though which I think goes a long way in keeping the heat down.
Ill try and remember to measure the length of the engine but it'll be without the fan in mine!
Hello, thanks for checking, electric fans were suggested to me,but I don't like them on old reliable iron.If I can't use a mechanical fan on the cummins because of clearance I will go with the 7.3 with a turbo.
I built my truck ,79 F350 crew cab to tow heavy,48 ft race trailer.

I would try to make the Cummins fit before I would go with a 7.3 idi. In my opinion the 7.3 idi isn't a good engine to swap into anything other than a truck one came in. I would rather use a 460 then a 7.3 idi.
Well if you have already decided that you want the driven fan, and don't want to move the transmission. Then you have already ruled out the cummins. Guys are pulling back the driveline because they need the room, I didn't do that so I removed the fan. You don't want to do either so you definitely have a clearance problem.
I just looked at your truck thread to see what you got going on under there, pretty cool. How close is the Aux. to the tranny? I'm only going of what i could see, but since the Aux looks divorce mounted is it really that much work to move the tranny back and just shorten the dshaft and shifter linkages? Sounds like you want the 5.9, You have the skills, why not make it work?
More clearance issues with a 7.3 than a cummins as far as i'm concerned. Cummins has a side mounted turbo/exhaust that can be routed downward as needed, also only has a high center point in the rear center.. more clearance, less electronics.
If you are debating between a 12v and a 7.3 idi.. the 12v is the only way to go IMO. While great for pulling, from past experience the IDI's are very sluggish, and 12v parts are everywhere.
If you were going the Powerstroke route, there would be a ton of clearance issues as there is much more going on up top. Its wider, theres a turbo downpipe and exhaust you'll have to make clearance for, lots of electronics.
Again, just my opinion. It all comes down to preference and time.. plus budget. If it were mine, i'd go CanadianBuzzard's route, 5.9, electronic fans, done.
Hello again, actually any diesel conversion from my current 460 is a performance downgrade, currently about 400 hp and 550ish ftlbs torque and with the 2 transmissions makes a diesel irrelevant. But I am going to be moving way out west Cali,Arizona,ect.....in the very near future and that crew cab is my tow truck for my drag car and my camper.Replacement is not a viable economic option. Not that I couldn't tune it to pass an emissions test but it will never pass the visual ,it's all gone and the fact the vin# says that it started life a 300 6.
And no I can't move either of the transmissions I had to redesign the entire chassis to install the spicer, their is also a hole in the floor with a bolt on cover in front of the rear seat because the aux. box pokes through the floor. the side tank was moved back 3ft ,1K worth of drive shafts ,fuel lines, shifter placement, not to mention there are 16 holes I drilled in the frame for the spicer mounts and cross members to fit the frame.ect...... the drivetrain stays put. 7.3idi/turbo it is.

Hi,I can't shorten the drive shaft between the transmissions. That shaft is the shortest that it can possibly be. I had to have it made so I could place the spicer. It is a 1330 on the t18 end and a 1550 on the spicer end and can not be made any shorter.
Chris
7.3 would be fine, a powerstroke would cool too, 5.9b cummins love to eat timing cover/front structure gaskets, as well as remember that the valve covers likely won't be able to be removed, and finally for that heavy of towing, a 7.3 navistar has steel reinforced ring lands on the pistons; a b series cummins are a all aluminum slug. That means the egts need monitored very close in a hard pull, stuck rings are more than a reality, sad to say have seen them stick in high elevation hard pulls on STOCK applications, yeah, really. I still have the piston in my shop above the bench.
Hello, thanks all for the responses. To put a period on this subject the truck is getting a 7.3idi.The cummins is just flat out to long. for my set up.
