2002 & Later Ranger- No EGR valve

Does anyone know why Ford decided to get rid of the EGR valve for these years? Did they replace it with something else? I have terrible pinging and thought it my be my EGR but apparently not. Thoughts?

The EGR valve has been replaced by valve timing. The exhaust valve is briefly held open on the intake stroke to suck exhaust gas into each cylinder.

Have you tried giving it a glass of water to clean out any carbon build up? Sea Foam works the same way.

Welcome to FTE.
On the ping problem, did it come about slowly over time, or suddenly after some event?
Do you have a lit CEL? If so, scan the computer for trouble code clues & post All code Numbers, as they can help focus a trouble shoot.
Might be helpful to know which engine & tranny your ride has & the mileage on it.

Which engine do you have? My 2006 4.0 SOHC definitely does have an EGR valve.

I own a 2002 V6 Flex Fuel 3.0. Apparently only the 3.0s from 2002 on lack the EGR. The 4.0s still have it. I bought the truck 6 months ago really cheap because it needed pretty much everything. It definitely has carbon build-up and pre-ignition, (spark knock, pinging whatever you want to call it). I read a post somewhere on here that maybe switching to colder plugs might help. It sounds like a can of marbles when it starts up but once its warm the marble noise goes away. However, the pinging is constant during acceleration.

I changed the spark plugs, pcv, wires, replaced Idle Air Control valve, cleaned the throttle plate, cleaned the MAF, replaced the Ignition Coil Pack and it runs great except for the annoying pinging.

As for Ford removing the EGR, what a stupid move. IMHO of course.

@ paw paw, I just read an old post from 2015 where you wrote "The 4.0L Ranger suffered early on with startup "marble noise" which Ford developed a "decarbon" TSB" Do you have any info on the TSB so I can look it up?

I bought some Gumout Tune Up in a Can with PEA and put some in my tank after watching a Scotty Kilmer video on using modern cleaners vs. SeaFoam. But you also wrote in that same post about using Techron 1 oz per 1 gal fuel. Not sure thats the ratio in my tank now but when I ned to fill it up again, Ill try the Techron with Tope Tier gas.

Go to the "Tech Info" thread atop this forum thread index page, open it & scroll down to the 4.0L de-carbon thread started by CowboyBilly9Mile. The de-carbon TSB is posted there.

Yes I've had longer lasting luck using 1oz/gal Techron Concentrate Plus, in the tank at the pump before filling, so to get good mixing & fill up with Chevron, Texaco, Caltex, or now Shell, which have some PEA in their fuel ad pack. This will raise the Techron PEA treat rate 10X above pump gas alone & that along with the 3500 rpm daily run ups called for in the de-carbon TSB, has kept my "marble noise" at bay for well over a decade now. All without having to change the oil & filter after ingesting the 3 cans of PM-3 called for in the TSB.

My Dealer performed this TSB de-carb treatment & it worked....BUT didn't last very long!!!!

I don't like running that much chemical mix through my combustion chambers (3 cans of PM-3) as you know some of it has to get into the crank case too & it'll dilute the oil.

Yes I agree run most of the current treated tank out before adding the Techron at the 1oz/gal treat rate.
Then again, after adding the Techron, perform daily TSB 3500 rpm run ups for a mile or two, to blow out the Techron loosened carbon & run most of the treated tank out before refilling. You may have to do the de-carb treatment more than once if the deposits are heavy.

I usually do my bi-annual Techron treatment just before my oil & filter change, so to get any deposits that have made their way to the sump, or in the oil filter, or any blow-by Techron in the oil, out of there.

Let us know how it goes.

Is this a 3.0 Flex Fuel engine?

Thought I had MY spark knock gone via a 180* TStat and a re-flash of the ECU, but its back now......weird......I have run countless treatments of Sea Foam and Techron and many high speed highway runs to blow the carbon out.......

Does anyone know (or have) a Taurus with the F/F 3.0?? Do they have the same problem??

I'm honestly about to throw the towel in and move up to a newer 4.0 Ranger!

Yes it is. I read your posts from 2015 on the issues you were having.

I just read this post:

I now have the new "fine wire" Motorcraft platinums (AGSF12FMF6), and they are running well!! I think the AGSF22PP is TOO HOT for the 3.0L FFV, and this might be one of the reasons for so many pinging problems!!

SuperCab, Did you try changing plugs? I installed the AGSF22PP plugs when I saw that the original owner had used AWSF32PP. My owners manual calls for the AGSF22PP for the Flex Fuel Engine. I think Im going to try to install the AGSF12FMF6 instead and see if the truck runs better with less pinging.
