I've been messing with a 49 Merc m47 pickup I picked up and am slowly turning into a daily driver. I guess I'll have my own "Flatty stories soon but what's got me puzzled is the heater. My friend's 46 Merc coupe has a flat blade fan with a reversing switch for defroster use. My truck has a squirrel cage fan with tube outlets and dampeners for defrost action. It doesn't matter which way I turn the motor -diddly happens. It seems that it does better drawing air thru the front doors but that seems silly. Does anyone know which is the proper fan rotating direction?
It's also a challenge re-learning shifting with the square cut, non-syncro 4-spd, I manage about 1 in 5 decent shifts, double clutching when needed. Everybody hears me coming fer sure!
Landy,
Welcome to FTE the best Ford Truck Forum on the world wide Web!
A picture of your heater would help us help you. There were several different heaters Ford used, plus many dealers or owners put in aftermarket heaters.
Some pics of your truck would help since some guys here like to look at pictures of old trucks.
Welcome to FTE! If you heater is a Ford three door heater, like the one above, it will need a two speed reversing switch to work properly. There is a dual fan in the unit, a six blade fan for heat then the switch is reversed and pull the DEF **** and the squirrel cage fan blows thru the defrost vents.

OK, I didn't know it would have the 2 fans in it. It is a 3door and I'll have to get a switch, the original burned was burned up when, I guess, the previous owner converted to 12v. I put an ordinary switch with a scrounged heater defroster coil in series to supply the motor with 6v.
Thanks for the help, I'll figure out the pic deal.
Thanks Ed, I just went out and checked the heater and there are no stops for the doors. They will push in another 3/16" until they hit the core, but they seem to spring back to flush by themselves.

Yeah, thanks for the pics (I had to switch to Firefox browser instead of Chrome to see them). I'm assuming the blade fan is towards rear of truck and is adjacent to the core. I managed to use a mirror and see that there is no blade fan in mine and only about a 1/4 in from the snout of the cage fan to the core. There was an old core in the pile of parts I got with the truck, I didn't compare the thickness to what's in there now -I'll take the shroud off and check that.
I'll post pics when I figure out how. This looks similar to other forums I follow.

I might still have 3 door heater and all the switches to go with it. Pulled from my '49 F-1. ( Thanks Daddy) I'm upgrading to 12volt, this might help you out.
Mine is 12v now, that's why I used the old resistor from a later defroster unit to lower the voltage for the motor. I could use a 3 pos'n switch to cross the motor supply/ground for reversing. The problem is I don't have room for the blade fan so I have to get the cover off when I have some time and see if the core is thicker than original. I appreciate the offer though, thanks anyway.
