There's a guy up in Canada that rebuilt/redesigned a set of broken ones that only lasted him 10 minutes when new. He is the self proclaimed "King of Obsolete" and he has a sizable collection of old stuff including some really cool dozers. Here's a link to the Mattracks rebuild and his website is worth a look as well.

I'd go with a Detroit TruTrac up front and leave the rear alone. Unless cost no object then same front and rear.

Sand is bad juju for these heavy things, unless you have giant tires aired way down. Carry boards and carpet samples.
