I am new to this site and new to building my 2018 5.0 ford f-150. I have a few questions on street and track drag radials and traction bars whats the best to put on my truck. I went to the track and ran my truck but on street tires i knew i wouldnt get the time i was looking for but still curious on what it would do . I spun all the way to 3rd gear which made my 60 foot time awful 2.6 and my quarter mile 15.2 now how ever i put it in 4x4 high and ran 14.4 in a quarter but it seemed to die hard coming out of the hole which still made my 60 foot 2.1 .the mods that i have it should do better i think but im not for sure . I have a peddle commander, airaid cold air intake ,aluminum drive shaft, sctx4 tunner with E85 tune it has a 2.5 inch level and 305 55r20 size tires . I dont kno much about what to do what not to do or what to buy like i said im new to all this but will take all the pointers tips i can get and i will appreciate every bit of it lol. I really would like to make my truck as mean as i can. I will be going to buy long tube headers and a different exhaust i want something loud and whipple in the near future as well so if you can help me on that note as well id appreciate it also thanks and feel free to get back in touch with me soon as possible . I took the side steps off my truck and the spare also
Welcome 5.0punisher. You will be our first drag racer.
Tires are subjective, but to get best results you will want some drag specific tires. But you won’t be legal driving to and from the track on them. You might want to check out Tire Rack reviews for tires in your size. Look for the best dry traction and highest speed rating.
You can get crazy with traction bars or a 4 link rear conversion. Or you could check out Roadmaster Active Suspension. Easy to install and has the added benefit of stabilizing a heavy load.
The best time will be run in 4wd, so I don't think drag tires will help at this point. I say that because it's unlikely you'll be spinning all 4.
It would be cheaper and more useful to have a set of p-metric street tires in the factory 275/55/20...or maybe even a tad smaller diameter...for your drag race nights. They will be lighter than your current setup.
I can't say much past that, because I don't race.
However, it seems a lifted truck would have some aero and stability disadvantages that a factory or lowered truck wouldn't be penalized with...
I have noticed the fastest and quickest vehicles tend to be low, light, and powerful.
I've got the 3.5 so my times will definitely be different but you do not need drag specific tires - yet. I run 275-70-18 Cooper Discoverer ATP that weigh 55# each.
Launching in 4h with the rear diff locked is your best option. I run mine up to about 2700 RPM and as soon as I let off the brake the gas pedal goes to the floor. I get a little tire spin but not enough to worry about (some spin is good to keep wheel speed up a bit). I've cut low 1.9 60' times this way.
As far as the launch RPM, you'll have to play around with that a bit to find what works for your setup and that may change when you change tires.
Did you air down your tires or were you running at the door pillar posted tire pressure?
I drop the air in each tire 10lbs but still didnt help i may try pulling the pedal commander off to see what that would do its only on there for the reaction time of fuel acceleration

Thanks man i appreciate the truth and the time to help me out. I just figured with the 4h id brake something didnt wanna chance it and im thinking about lowering it on down also . I see everyone is saying pretty much to forget the street and track radials and run 4h i guess ill try that out first so 4h and pull the **** out which locks the differential correct

Did you happen to baseline your truck before any of you mods?
I've raced diesels for years. What I always like to do is have several good runs between each mod to see how the truck reacts. For example, running it with no tune, then with your tune without you pedal commander, and the adding your pedal commander to see what the net gain or loss was. I also keep a log book of notes with my time sheets so I can see how temp, launch rpm, etc. effect my runs...
...so 4h and pull the **** out which locks the differential correct
Correct. And do not worry about switching it back during the run but make sure you do before you make the turn around. Makes on hell of a rough ride id you don't.
