Ok ladies and gentlemen, tonight I went go get gas and pulled up to the gas pump and when I went to turn the truck off the lock cylinder just spun. I can spin it backwards but when I would go forward it would go to the starter engagement portion and I could engage the starter with the truck running. I got home and pulled my security key that is wired to the ignition coil. I looked on rockauto.com for a new cylinder and it gives me 4 different lock cylinders. I don't know which cylinder I need can anyone help. My truck is a 1995 ford f250 4x4 5.8l. XL all help AND advice is greatly appreciated
The different lock cylinder options available exist so that the replacement can be matched to the door lock cylinder. Both cylinders share a pin location on the key. This was just discussed recently.
If you don't care about having two keys, one for the door and one for the ignition, then it doesn't matter which one you buy. Follow the instructions in the above thread, then you can get new keys made that match your existing door locks, and new ignition lock.
Thanks for the reply. After I posted the question I scrolled down the forum and found the OTHER post and read through that. I was going to reply to my own thread and write never mind but forgot. Thanks again for the reply
Well that didn't work. Put new lock cylinder in and same thing. It feels like something broke in the column. I took the left side dash panel the instrument bezel and steering wheel plus the plastic covers over the column to see if there's anything obvious. I think I might need a new column. Any advice would be great.
I think I figured out the problem. After watching a couple you - tube videos I went to the truck and removed the ignition control module under the column and saw a plastic rod that I can move freely and the upper portion doesn't move I'm thinking it has to move as one but it doesn't. Now knowing that do I need a new column or can I just replace that.
That's not a "control module", it's just the ignition switch. There's an actuator that connects between the cylinder and the switch. Just do a search on any of the forums for "ignition switch actuator"; loads of threads on how to replace it. Shouldn't require replacing the column.
ya know after I took the driver side plastic off and was poking around I googled the actuator part number on an exploded view of the column and came across that thread and read it twice. Now I'll order the two parts that it needs. As for the shifter being wobbly it's not but might do it anyway.
So this little shmuck is what caused my problem. Can start the truck but can't shut it off. So if anyone has a problem with not being able to turn off the truck or car for that matter.
