ordering ignition lock assembly need clarification
rock auto website shows several different ones with the designations ...
number 1 cut letter a;
number 2 cut letter b, and so on .
any info that might have once been stamped on my keys has long since worn off.
how do i make sure i am ordering the right one ? they all claim to fit my truck (1994 f250xl) .
thanks very much for that , ifry !
i did a fair bit of searching, on this and other sites, and while i came up with a lot of references to this, nobody actually answered the question.
according to this info, the "number 1 cut letter a" etc. refers to the depth of cut on the 6th tumbler. i still dont see how this would affect which lock a person orders, but since my current key has a very shallow cut on that position i will order the lock that seems to match it. perhaps that will help a locksmith if i go in to get my new key cut on one side to fit my door locks (which, apparently, is doable).
A locksmith can make your new cylinder work with your existing key. Likely the locksmith can sell you a new lock cylinder, or repair your existing, instead of waiting for mail order.
I don't know about '92-up, but '91 and before have 5-cut keys. I re-key my older trucks/cars so they all use the same key, I just did my '75 Cougar last night to match my '91 F150 and '78 Ranchero. The lock cylinders have 5 pins, not 10.
Even my newer DD is a 2006 and it has an 8-cut key, so I am not getting this 10-cut thing you are displaying here.
ifry ... that link was an absolute gem. i was worried that when i got my new key cut by a locksmith to fit the door AND the ignition that i would have to flip the key over when using it for one lock and then the other. this is not the case, and that makes things easier.
