Red face new problem

Well now i have a new problem I can't find the keys to my truck any where in or outside of my house, and big dummy here hasn't had an extra set made like I normally do when I get a new vehichle. I have hunted for several hours now w/no luck, so my question is how hard is it to put a new ingnition key kit in w/out changing the whole column out? And am I in for a job if it comes to that? If it comes down to that in the end 'b/c I'm going to look just one more time for them in the morning' and if a salvage yard doesn't have one does NAPA or any of the parts store's normally carry them? I know that was a dumb quetion b/c they probably do cary them but I just wasnt to make sure, better safe than sorry.

This big dummy sez: If the door lock cylinder is keyed alike to the ignition cylinder (you didn't mention what yr your truck is, so I don't know for sure), a locksmith can pick the lock and make you a new key...or...if the truck is open, remove the lock cylinder from the door yourself and take it to a lock shop...that'll save you the 50 buck service call.

It's a heck of a lot easier removing the door lock cylinder than removing the ignition cylinder. Just peel back the weatherstrip, and pull out the clip, the cylinder will fall partially out of the door, you then have to remove the clip that retains it to the lock rod.

IF the ignition cylinder isn't keyed alike to the door cylinder, then it may be keyed alike to the glove box cylinder...getting that out is a snap.

if u had a key to the ign its a simple to change out switch, theres a button on the bottom of column under the lock cylinder but u have to turn it to run to remove. try goin to ford with the vin and title if lock was never changed they can cut u a key to the factory lock for around 20.00

The actual ignition switch is at the bottom of the steering column, and it works by a long rod from the ignition lock cylinder actuator, which works when the key is turned via a brass gear below the cylinder.

Getting the ignition lock cylinder out of the upper flange is far more difficult than pushing a button. If it were that easy, 1000's of trucks could be stolen easily. To get into the steering column on most models, the steering wheel must be removed with a steering wheel puller. On some, removing the upper shroud around the column allows access.

The VIN may or may not be usable to get the original key code, it depends on the year of the vehicle. These trucks keys have 10 cuts, and with only the code, the keys must be cut by a hand operated cutter.

I think a few people have tried to have replacements cut with a VIN and were turned away. The 1993 owners manual states you should have a code provided with all your original purchase information that a dealership can use to order new keys. I do not have this card as I think it was provided seperately from the owners manual itself.

Since I don't know what year your truck is, I can't say for sure what you'll need to to to replace the ign cylinder...but on my 1990 is was as simple as driving in a pin you can access under the column, removing and sliding in the new cylinder.

Tried the dealer key thing--they said nothing under '97 could they cut a new key from
the VIN. I had to have a locksmith do mine---lost 1 key also---the door lock did not
match up with the ignition, which stumped the locksmith, so now I have a different door key than the ignition in my '94, plus extras, and the one stupid glovebox key!
Locksmith had to replace the ignition key switch on the column. Drilled it out pretty quickly.

In most cases you need the key to turn the ignition tumbler to "ON" before that pin will push in.

Without a key, you usually have to drill out the old tumbler.

I drilled mine out, I bought the truck w/o keys 'cause the po lost'em...you got to be careful you don't drill to deep (use a similar key as a gauge) I used a 1/4 drill, I just worked it until the guts came out, after all that you need to get the shavings out...all in all took about an hour, if you not too sure of yourself get a locksmith b/c you can easily do damage

mine is a 88, I done more searching today and still couldn't find my keys, would I be better off going to a salvage yard and getting a used column that has keys and replacing the whole column or would it be easier to replace the ignition itself?? the one thing I can say is thank god i have a sliding rear window so I can get into the truck to unlock it..lol and thanks for the tips so far

go to the dealer and a least look at a new lock cylinder, this may tell you what your up against...I got one from the dealer for 30.00 CAD, so if a locksmith can get it out for you and make a key for under 75.00...your proby not looking too bad...as for changing the column, don't you think THAT would be too much trouble, comparitively speaking?

on the 88 u HAVE to be able to turn ign to run! I guess i should have been more specific. u might have to drill out the tumbler but that would be much easier than changing out the column
