squeak inner steering column

I have a feeling my shifter collar is splitting out. I have a lot of shifter slop when I change the selector from P to D. I also have a very annoying squeak when turning the steering wheel in any direction. I checked under the hood while moving the shift lever back and forth and there is no looseness at the linkage. How difficult is this to change on a 76 F-150 CS ?

The squeak is usually cased by a worn upper and/or lower steering column bearing. These are sealed bearings, so they cannot be greased.

The slop may be caused by a worn or cracked selector lever nylon bushing, There's one on the column lever, another on the trans lever. These are nylon, 'snap in' and are available from Ford.

The A/T shift collar is the same: 1973/77 F100/350; 1974/77 Bronco & 1975/77 Econoline.

Ford recently obsoleted it, but there are some available NOS .. It may also be reproduced.

Thanks ND I think it is the collar. I notice it is loose on the column and wiggles on the steering column when I shift the selector lever from P or any other range. I just looked and B.G.Y. has them as a new item # 27011

1973-77 Ford F100, F150, F250, F350

I dont know how easy this will be to switch out but for $30.00 for the part, the price is right.

Mine is doing the same thing, but only when I turn left. It's a sound that almost gives me an instantaneous headache! My shift collar is fairly new and doesn't wobble. I was originally thinking the horn contacts had dried out or worn to a sharp edge and were scraping the brass horn ring, but after pulling the wheel and lubing them, it's still doing it.
Thanks NumberDummy for the word on the bearing. I'll have to tear mine down this weekend check that out.
