I have read several posts where people have stated, "when my truck is going through its regen.". My question is, how do I know when my truck is going through a regen. process, I have never noticed any difference while driving? I cant say I have noticed anything on the dash. Please explain.
You can ask your dealer to "turn on" your Diesel Particulate Filter indicator (read on your dash). Once your filter shows "full" the regen process will start. The heat from the extra fuel in your exhaust will burn-clean your DPF, and throughout regen, as a result of the extra fuel being burned, your fuel mileage will drop as mentioned earlier.

I successfully turned on the DPF screen using FORscan and as mentioned it will show you the % of DPF filled but I wanted more so I purchased an Edge CS2 which is strictly a monitor. I switched the turbo gauge on the dash to DPF level and now have the turbo boost, EGT and regeneration status displayed on the Edge and I could NOT be happier. The Edge cost me just shy of $300 and it was well worth it to me.
Today at 280 miles on my new truck I saw with positive notification (via CS2) the regen started. As others mentioned I also saw MPG drop and there is an obvious smell from the heat of the DPF doing its thing.
Keep in mind if you tow alot, the % is not always an indicator of when the truck will regen. My last 2 regens have happened with way less than 100%. If its a daily driver without alot of towing it will be pretty accurate using the % screen. Soot level plays a big factor in the regen status if you tow alot. This is where a monitor comes into play and you start learning the parameters on the 2017. The biggest indicator for me is the exhaust temps will get up in the 1100 degree range, and I find it the best way to know for sure it is in regen. If I havent towed alot, the % screen is spot on. Just my experience.

you can change the gauge on dash to dpf level? Do you mean def level? I can only cycle between turbo/def/trans temp on mine. I have to look at dpf % in the section with the digital speedo and all that stuff

Sorry that was a typo I meant def level. So, because I can see a Boost gauge on the Edge CS2, I switched the turbo gauge on the dash to def level so I can always see that. If I want to see dpf % I need to look at it in the center cluster as well (now that I turned it on using ForScan). I believe the Edge CS2 can also display dpf % so I may change the EGT to dpf % instead.
The CS2 can display 3 different things when in gauge mode. I definitely want to see the turbo gauge (so I can leave dpf level on stock gauge) and when in regen, I just need to decide what to watch in the third spot. I will upload a picture today for you to see.
Also, it can switch between 2 different screens so I am going to program screen 2 as “digital†display because since it will only be a numerical value, this option can show 6 different values. So, I will have gauge mode on 99% of the time and when I want to see more information I just push the right arrow button and it changes to screen 2 and will have 6 more digital things to watch.
Does anyone have any suggestions what 6 values might be worth my attention once in a while?
Here are the ways you can tell a regen is occurring:
-You can smell an extremely hot smell when the truck is stopped
-Your average fuel economy will suddenly drop, or your instant will drop
-The turbo gauge will suddenly become much more responsive and active
-For the finely-tuned ear, the Powerstroke actually sounds a little different
Early 2008 Super Duty diesel trucks had another cool feature that would alert the driver that a regeneration was occurring. Ford called it a "Thermal Event" but most people would just call it "flames shooting out the tail pipe."
As for the dashboard gauge, it can be activated by the dealer or by using FORScan. Most dealers have no idea what you're talking about and don't know how to do it, but the instructions link posted by peterpsc above should do the truck. Some dealers will charge you the standard $100/hr minimum 1-hour charge because they are using IDS, but a good dealer won't. It takes them all of 5 minutes. If they do, keep in mind you can buy the MX Link OBDII adapter for use with the free FORScan software for less than that amount and do it yourself...plus any other mod you want and the ability to read DTC's from any of the onboard computers. Well worth it in my opinion.
In my experience, regens usually start just after the screen reads 100% full. You can actually watch the % full drop as the regen proceeds. Most times, it will not drop to zero, but more often 10-25%. Obviously, if you shut the truck off during a regen it will not lower as completely as it could...and as a result may resume a regen once you are underway on your next trip. Or it may wait until the DPF screen reads 100% full again. Definitely a cool screen to have available.
You can definitely either do it via dealer or ForScan which I did but I wanted positive notification and the Edge does this all while giving me the chance to view other things so it was a win win for me.

jmeo, I noticed you have the DPF status pid on your monitor. Does that particular pid work? On mine it does not, it always says OFF even when its in regen. Have you ever witnessed it say "ON"?
