OK gang I had my tuner stolen out of my truck while it was tuned to a higher HP setting. My truck has had the EGR delete done so my impression is that I can't just buy another tuner right?
I have to have the dealer update the chip which will automatically make the truck go into limp mode am I right?
What do I need to do step by step to fix the issue that some druggie has put me in by stealing a tuner that is married to my truck and therefore not very valuable to others
First, your programmer is useless to anyone because it is locked to your VIN. So I would first notify STC that your unit was stolen so that if someone sends it in to them to have it unlocked they can notify you. It might be a slim chance but worth a shot.
Second, I'd purchase another SCT Tuner. Then I'd use the street or mild canned tune and use your current Wild tune you have on the PCM now will be your return to stock tune saved on the new SCT.
By going to the dealer you will be reflashed to a stock tune and will lose your performance tune.
I haven't had to do this but if it happened to me that's what I would try.
Best of luck.
Sorry to hear about your tuner being stolen. You might want to check pawn shops near where it was stolen. Contacting SCT like mentioned above sounds like a good idea too.
Good luck.
87crewdually: It seems like I read somewhere that you end up with problems if you don't start with the factory tune. Like the tunes work off of and modify the factory. I don't remember where but it was on a forum. There wasn't anything special about the tune on there now it was just one of the out of the box tunes that came with the unit.
MooSSe: I have checked the pawn shops in the area and no dice. I did almost catch the guy that did it but his legs were longer than mine and he got away in the dark... A whole nuther story there.
Apocalypse: Unfortunately I did not buy it new. It came with the truck a year ago. I also have noticed that the part of the box with the serial number is worn or torn so that it is unreadable.
It totality then it sounds like you're screwed unless someone sells it to a pawn shop. What you would need to do then is have them allow you to plug it in to your truck to prove it's a match with your VIN. I hope you filed a police report if you are going to persue it.
When it is first plugged in and turns on the first screen will say locked or unlocked, locked in your case & it displays unlocks left.
oops the above is on a X3.
For the X4 after it's plugged in and recognizes it's not plugged into the vehicle it's married too it should give you a message.
For X3 & X4 you can go to device info menu and it will tell you if it's locked/unlocked and how many unlocks left. SCT permits 5 locks/unlocks before you have to send it back to them to be reset for a fee.
Support with SCT says there could be a long list of potential complications from not starting with a stock image.
Are they blowing smoke (have to say that) or is there really a possibility of "complications"?
Logically if it overwrites the entire ROM then the only "complication" I could have would be not being able to return to stock for troubleshooting purposes.... right?
they say that "stacking" the tunes could very well create a non drivable issue but that they can use the old street tune and the new tune and filter out the an original stock file and put it back. No additional charge with support as long as i have about an hour and access to windows PC for remote session. The guy I talked to sounded like he knew what he was talking about and that it seemed to happen regularly.
