tailgate problem

I finally got my truck back today and got excited and put the tailgate on that I just picked up last week. Well after adjusting it I slammed it shut pretty proud of myself for getting it lined up on the first try. Well I went to open it and the handle is really hard to move and the rods that pull the locking tabs are disconected. Any idea how to open it up?

The rods are either disconnected at each latch or disconnected at the handle.

50/50 odds.... I'd remove the handle assembly first since both are affected. I have a dent and bumps.... one of 'em has an access panel.

Take 2 flat tip screwdrivers and carefully pry (from inside the bed) the locking pieces 431D76 back in the t/g body/latch.

While you are pushing the t/g closed to take some pressure off, this works better with 2 people.

Then it is 431A78 rod fishing time. A metal coat hanger works pretty good, after you flip the t/g upside down on its long axis edge, to get the rods closer to the handle.

I bet your plastic rod retainers 431C56 are broke.

PERFECT! Thats what I was needing. The rod going to the left side is hanging there with no clip. I haven't gotten around to looking for the right one yet. I think I'll leave it alone until I get the clips. Thanks!

If you look close to the last pic you can see a home made retainer out of a piece of sheet metal and some RTV on the lower rod.

If you have skinny fingers, you can get the lower one back into it's hole right in place, and open the tailgate normally.

The tailgate rod clip (1973/96 same & R/L same) is available in the "help" section of auto parts stores and is also the same as the door lock cylinder rod clip of 1973/79 F100/350, 1974/78 LTD/Grand Marquis, 1979/91 Crown Vic/Grand Marquis, 1983/91 Ranger tail gate and etc.

Yes.
E6AZ-5421952-A replaced D4AZ-6521952-A & E3TZ-1021952-A

Look up the tailgate clip basic part number of 431C56 in the 1973/79 truck catalog and you'll see it says refer to basic part number 21952.

The C/D catalog that was scanned from the 1980 edition that most everyone is using, shows the D4AZ number, but not the replacing part number of E6AZ.

However, if people have the final edition of 10/1988 (only available on microfiche), it does show the E6AZ number.

The only member of FTE that I'm aware of that has this catalog is...

Excellent write-up guys. I was looking for something like this ages ago, but haven't had to open my tailgate in a long time.

Mine is also stuck lol.
