One of the latch rods on the handle of my '79 popped out, causing the handle not to release both sides of the latch. This isn't anything new. I already replaced the bushing on the lower one which goes to the left side latch, but I can not figure out how to reach the one to the right side, which is way up in the hole.
I'm sure I fixed this on my last truck, but can not for the life of me figure out how to get my hand in there to grab the end of the rod, let alone pop it back into the hole on top, against the pressure of the spring.
I would remove the bolts from the backside of the tailgate to loosen the handle so it drops to the bottom of the tailgate handle opening. I've found it's easier to pop the plastic latch rod retainer into the handle first, and then pop the metal rod in. A little bit of lubricating oil helps the metal rod snap in a little easier. Hope this helps.
Thanks. I hadn't thought of trying to lower the whole thing, but it makes sense. The problem right now is that I just can't get to it. Maybe unbolting will do the trick.
