Pull VSS Sensor and Found THIS!

Is this cause for alarm? It appears the vehicle speed sensor has metal flakes on it.

I was throwing C1229 -- Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Coherency Failure

I also snapped one of the ears off the plastic plug. Does the plug need to be replaced or have you guys ran dirty with one and it's fine?

On an unrelated note-- does the VSS actually report the speed to the speedometer? My speedo is functioning fine...

Just judging by the yuck on it, I would pull the cover at least to change the gear oil.

X2. Just replace it, I think mine was around $30. If you do pull the cover buy a LubeLocker gasket, no mess and reusable.

x3 on new fluid. I used RTV type sealant, but I was doing both the front and rear at the time and was not aware of the gasket available. This was a week after I bought the truck and if/when I change the fluid next time I will use the gasket.

If you just broke one ear off that connector you could be good with it, I have a few in use that way. If you broke both ears you'll need to replace it or hold it in place with another device, maybe a wire tie would work. If you hook it up and it comes apart you'll notice it in your speedometer, cruise control and your abs light will light.

So can this part go bad even IF my speedo seems to work fine?

I had one light my ABS light but everything else worked fine. I have read on here that sometimes you can clean that sensor and it will work but I have never done it.

Replaced the sensor. Still have the code and the light :/

The truck makes a strange gargle sound on key turn and then the ABS light comes on. It makes me think there may be some air in the ABS pump...

I had a brake line blow out a while back when this all started. I wonder if air got in there....

There is a thread around called "What's that growl?" or something similar. It's not a rare occurrence. Did you clear your light? You might have to clear to get that to go out.

Yeah I cleared it with the computer and it just immediately returns...

I also changed the fluid just in case there was metal in it causing some issues.
