I had a strange thing happen to me yesterday on my way home. As I came to a stop at a traffic light, my speedometer needle jumped up to about 30mph, then came back down to 0mph. This happened just as the truck came to a full stop. Never seen this happen before. Anyone know what happened & should I be concerned? Has not done it again since then.
Could be that the speed sensor on the rear end is getting ready to go on you. On the other hand, a rear end fluid change might do the trick if it is fairly old with metal particles suspended in it due to normal wear and tear. The metal particles could be throwing off the sensor.
The sensor is on top of the differential and is rather easy to replace. The downside to replacing just the sensor is if the fluid is in need of changing, you're just going to get the same problem again. Your call!
The sensor on top of the rear diff. is not used for the spedometer. That one is used for the ABS system. The vehicle speed sensor is at the transmission that is used for the speedometer.
Thanks for the replies. It hasn't done it again since that one day, so I'm going to let it go for now, until it happens again...if it does. At least now I'll know where to look if it happens again.
Weird... My RPM gauge did that the other day.... Almost like it was one of the old rotating cable gauges and the cable was dragging.... Has not happened again......
Could be a way out in left field thought, but check your battery... Sometimes all or some of the gauge needles will go to max then min then normal.....when cranking = the battery is out the way out...
