My question is very generic and could apply to any Ford truck but refers to my 2004 expedition. I'm asking here because this forum generates so much traffic and I'll actually get an answer.
I'm about to replace all 8 coils on my Expy. There is a low RPM mis at take off and sometimes it feels like a misfire during certain driving operations.
It's not significant enough to throw a code. However, my best mechanic feels that a coil(s) or boot(s) is / are failing and a full replacement would solve the slight misfire issues.
I changed the plugs 20K miles ago and I inspected the boots then. Like a dumbazz I didn't replace the boots like I should have.
Looking around on the different autoparts sites for coils, I'm coming up with names like MSD, Denzo, Delphi, Standard Auto as well as MC.
I don't want to spend the big bucks for MC coils. Even at rockauto they're about $41.00 each.
Knowing that the MC part is likely the best option, please steer me to a great option besides MC. Who makes the MC coils? It's likely one of the brands that I listed.
Your best bet is to use motorcraft boots first, then try coils next. The ecoboost guys have gone rounds a figured out that the motorcraft stuff is the ONLY replacement parts place. Sucks to pay the premium, but it’s reality.

The coils and boots are 13 years old with 116K miles on them. I ain't pulling them out twice (possibly) but like you I suspect that a boot is cracked.
My time is too limited and valuable to fiddle with this twice.

I replaced mine on my 2010 F-150 5.4L a few weeks back with Delco's. Got the entire set for 130.00 and since money at the time was tight, it was the best option. A mechanic friend of mine told me that once you pull the coil packs to replace them, so they don't start to give problems. It was his suggestion to replace the coil packs when I changed the plugs to prevent the down the road headache.
Should you replace coils as preventative maintence at a particular mileage or only if a problem? we are coming up on 90k miles and runs fine, but mechanic says to replace spark plugs [1st time] and while he is in there says should repalce the coils?

You should replace the boots and plugs together and a coil(s) as it / they begin to break down.
The issue that i'm having is an erratic misfire between 45-50 MPH. I'm positive that a worn boot is causing this but I'm not going to pull the coils just to replace the boots.
So, I bought 8 Duralast coils from AZ with a lifetime warranty for $169.00 over Thanksgiving. I'll get them on soon.
