Difference in ignition coils

I recently had Big Bertha in to fix a valve cover gasket leak and they told me 2 of the ignition coils were needing replaced now but others could wait. I paid $58 a piece for them, I eventually want to replace the rest and when I looked online I can find the ignition coils for $80 for 8, what's the difference? Or is there a difference?
Thanks
Kay

Yes. OEM are insanely better, I learned my lesson with the thermostat I need to swap one of mine out and I have no plans of going astray again

The difference? Motorcraft ones last over 100K miles typically and cheap chinese ones last anywhere from 10 miles to 100K miles... kind of a crap shoot. Don't put in anything other than Motorcraft coils. More often than not you will regret it.... especially when replacing all of them because with 8 cheap ones the likelihood of getting one that will fail prematurely goes up drastically. I went through this and suffered so you don't have to. They list for about 75 bucks each but if you look around you find an entire set for about 350 which is less than 45 a piece... Like here...

On my ford f35 utility truck I replaced all 8 with accell brand coils, three of them died within a year. I bought motorcraft ones and sold the truck after putting another 170k miles on it without incident.

I put coil packs in my Expedition late last summer. I purchased the low cost China mfg coil packs. Price for eight was $59.99 on Ebay vs $360.00 for the OEM's.

This truck is not my DD, so thought I would give it a try. No failures yet, but it has only been few thousand miles.

When I purchased them I joked with my wife about these coils not lasting too long.

I paid $150 for 8 ACDelco coils from some taxi company on eBay. This was probably 4-5 years ago and the Crown Vic they were put in is still driving around with them.

I just did the coils on my 250. I removed no less than 4 different brands.

I'm the type who will study and investigate the heck out of something before laying down my hard earned money, and after a week of poking around the Interwebs, I decided without a doubt to go with Motorcraft. There was just too much hit and miss with every other brand- to include the so-called "performance" deals at Summit.

I bought my Motorcrafts at RockAuto.com for $41.99 ea plus shipping. Went with the Motorcraft plugs too, for the same reason...

I saved 5 good coils from when I changed the coils on my LX crown vic... and bought 10 coils and 10 injectors from a 2001 v10 with ~95k miles for $75. Guy said engine was no good because it spun a bearing... for the price I figure I got plenty of spares.

How is it that these coils or coil packs seem to fail so often? With so many coils sharing the load shouldn't replacement be pretty rare?

It's not a matter of sharing the load, coils have been failing since the invention of them. You only hear about the ones that failed but there are millions that haven't failed. Coils can fail due to other problems like a chronic miss that builds resistance and heat over time. Many coils have over 200k miles on them. While they are "sharing the load" they are also putting out more energy (per size) and there are more of them. My truck has 170k miles on the originals.

Well, sure. Coils go bad but, it just "seems" that failure of the single coils found in older vehicles was rare? Dunno, wan't around back then.

The three on my truck that were Motorcraft made it to over 250,000 miles, so there's that...

When I first started reading the threads here on FTE I ran out and purchased 2 OEM coils and stored them in the rear compartment. I sold my 02' with over 228k and never had the need to replace one. Ya never know!

They failed like everything else did.
