My Two Trucks
What matters a lot more is that my truck now has a new OEM air filter. My engine and I are both very grateful for everyone's help and advice! My knees will probably forgive y'all later

MAF is cleaned and shiny, and the MAP hose and nipple are clear. There was just a little soot in each.
I got everything put together just in time to go pick up my son from work and took it for a good drive, and it seems to be running great. The fuel tank is full and I'm actually looking forward to calculating my mileage!
Just thought I'd document this, in case it comes up again. Here are some more complete shots of the AFE set up that my truck came with. (The white residue is frost)
The tabs on the filter fit the framework in the housing
A seal around the open end of the filter fits the front of the housing
Ready to install
The slide pins are about the only thing that was still good, they move freely but things definitely got too hot. I already had new pads, but DH is picking up new calipers and rotors - again.
And this time there will be new hoses, too.
1 - Excursion mpg was 18.82 on our trip south this weekend! This was 100% highway driving, in the city was just under 15. I haven't filled up yet since the return trip, but I don't expect it to be quite as high. More head wind, and more up hill driving.
2 - Excursion rear brakes are no longer heating up.
3 - Picked up a big box of parts on our trip south this weekend! I had them shipped to an address in WA, saving me about $100 on shipping costs. Alternator, wires, tranny upgrades...
Sumas has several companies that do nothing but receive parcels for Canadians. $3.00 pick up fee, and they even take CDN dollars at par! I've been in stores that refuse to take Cdn pennies. The main highway from Vancouver to the BC interior is within a mile or two of the border there, so it was barely out of our way.

Also, Ed (ficmrepair.com) convinced me to upgrade a couple of solenoids, and replace an unused switch with a dummy plug.
Transmission
Edit to add: there are links at the bottom to more info and pricing on the parts I bought - two different stage 2 solenoids, and transmission dummy plug.
I think I jumped on these because I'm a little gun-shy about transmission problems.
My previous vehicle was a Suburban, and it had 6 new trannies in 4 years. The first one we paid for, and it lasted almost a year and then after it died, the shop replaced it on warranty. The next one lasted a month - warranty again, and the next one didn't even make it home from the shop. Warranty again, and he said he put a better one in. It must have been better because that one lasted 3 years, IIRC.
By the time that one quit, the shop that had done the first 4 had closed (for personal reasons, I'm told) so we ordered a new tranny from the dealership. DH thought he might do the swap himself, but in the end we had the dealer do it, and it's a good thing we did!
When it was finally done they had someone deliver it to our house, and when she got here she said "I don't know what you had your vehicle in for, but your transmission seems to be shot."
Back to the dealer it went, and they spent 10 days trying to convince corporate that the transmission was faulty. That's the only story we ever heard, anyway. They finally got the go-ahead to put in another, and that one lasted at least until we parked it. I don't remember the details of the warranty, but I know it had exceeded the time limit, but not the mileage.

It has come to my attention that I should really have a cover for my driver's side battery and PCM.
I decided to hold off on replacing the solenoids for now. I don't have a garage/shop, it's cold out, and I'm not experiencing shifting problems. The possibility of having to remove the valve body to get at one of them was not terribly appealing yesterday evening, after dark, and I needed the truck today. Who knows - maybe they'll end up in the crew cab next spring as it is more likely to be hauling heavy loads.
Here's the old and new dummy plugs. I had to reshape that clip to get it to hold the new one in.
