Early model super cab head rest solution
I had some arm rests laying around from a console/jump seat swap. I had been wanting to add some head rests for the kids in back and noticed that these arm rests were nicely padded, matched the interior, and shaped perfect. Steps
1. remove rear back rest by simply lifting up (so easy I love it)
2. remove felt cover from arm rests
3. purchase simpson struts at home depot. Not sure of part number, they are 2" wide, and are about 10" long with a 90 degree angle at the bottom, which sticks out about 2". It is about 1/8" thick and sturdy. Pick up 1.5 inch long bolts, and nuts washers. bend angled tab to about 110 degrees so they sit vertical when mounted. Cut to fit with grinder, you'll want to leave about one inch on the angled side and about 7" on the long side, depending on how high you want the head rest.
4. drill holes to attach armrest to strut and strut to truck through center/middle of arm rest, mounting strut bottom and top, and metal ridge below rear window (behind seat)
5. slide strut through arm rest to match up holes in strut/armrest. you will have to put a blade through the cushioning on the arm rest along the metal frame and cut a slit.
6. cut a slit in the outer felt armrest cover for the strut mount bracket
7. slide the cover back on the armrest half way. put the strut through the cover slit, the foam, and match up mounting holes. Bolt together through foam, while pushing back the arm rest cover
8. spray paint struts black (if you want) before placing cover back on
9. mount with bolts onto truck and replace seat.
