1st gear grinding. its hard to tell if i'm in gear or not at stop lights. only in 1st. all other gears no problem at all. and its not every time that this happens. So i'd first like to change the fluids. i assume the lower square bolt is the drain plug and the passenger side bolt that is considerably higher is the fill plug? also curious how one gets to that hole to fill? it must be a grease gun type instrument to get the new stuff in? What type of fluid do i put in there? its a 1966 F100 2WD with a 240 Straight 6, and a 3 on the tree manual transmission.
Looks like you have the drain plug I.D. correctly but not sure if changing the gear oil is going to remedy your trouble. Sure won't hurt anything though. It may turn out that you have trouble inside your gear shift cove. That is the side of the tranny where the shifting rods attach. Remove the shifting rods and work the shifting levers by hand and see if they sort of snap into place when they are moved. There are *****. springs and plungers inside the cover than hold them in position. They may be just crudded up or damaged. If you end up having to take the cover off, you will have to drain the oil first so I would try to figure out what was going on before I threw new oil into it. Do you have a shop manual or parts catalog. they will be your best resources if you plan to do much to your truck.
