Help! E4od rebuild 3 clutch forward drum?

So I'm working on rebuilding my e4od. I bought a transparts overhaul kit with red eagle clutches. I'm waiting on thrust washers to come so doing what I can. Problem is my forward drum only had 3 clutches in it. The 6 from Alto have no chance of fitting. Remove one and it fits but clearance is tight, like .02. I have a 4 clutch drum from a 94, but it has some discoloration from being hot. There were pieces of a snap ring in it and the clutches were melted together. Otherwise it looks good, would take a lot of cleaning to use, but I don't know if I should with the discoloration.

Don't know the answer to your questions but I'm interested in E4OD rebuilds. I would enjoy reading anything you post to this thread.

Here are some E4OD links I saved:

E4OD rebuild

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...d-i-found.html

Ford E4OD Overhaul for Heavy Duty Towing and Off-Road Use

That fourwheeler link talks about your red clutch and says you have to use a thinner pressure plate.

I wouldn't worry about discoloration as long as the splines are in good shape.

Well I used it, we'll see how it goes. So turns out there are different direct drums also, but my kit came with specific instructions and extra parts to make it work. However the kit came with 7 bearings. 4 matched up with the book. I have an extra 7g178, and I have 2 7d234 which aren't listed in the book. On the package the 7g178 says

The book calls for one between the overdrive ring and center support, but that's the only place.

The other

Isn't in the atsg book. I read somewhere it was for the forward planet. So I'm not sure if parts have been update to different numbers/bearings, or if I just got sent the wrong parts. I can't find info anywhere on the web. Can anybody help? If not I figured I'd try n call them tommorow sometime

I've been instructed over the years that metal discoloration of internal engine/trans parts from heat is a sure sign of loss of strength.

Just an observation, mind you.

Brian's shop, if you can check that for me I would appreciate it. I haven't had a chance to call and they won't be open for awhile today.

I know that heat in excess will weaken tempered steel. But I thought considering the way that pressure/force is applied to the drum, that it probably would not be a big factor. If I have problems, I know what I'll have to fix, and at least I'll know how to do it. The nice thing is I know this thing well enough now that I think I could pull it out, break it down, and have it back in, in about 3 days, maybe 2.

Thanks, I sure appreciate it. Although I already broke everything back down, and had it back with the pump in by about 2 today. I found the 7d234, at least they looked right, and apparently I put them in the right spot. The one at the rear, I reused the old one. I don't think I wanna tear it completely down again to replace it. Hopefully this thread will help someone else down the road. Looks like i may not have even needed the bearing on the hub/shaft/center support, as I updated to the setup with a center support bearing, but I don't know for sure. Hopefully it doesn't hurt it.

I think I've got it all right. Now I've got to get it in the truck. Probably be at least a week before I get to try it. Still have to get transfer case, driveshafts, exhaust, accessories on motor, front clip, and the cab in before I can even try it.
