i am currently in the process of rebuilding my e4od. this is my first time so this is all new to me. im using the atsg manual for assistance and i think i have most of the stuff figured out. But now they are telling to me measure the clutch pack clearance to determine if a difffernt size snap ring needs to be used. whats the easiest way to do this, and would the stock snap rings still work with the new clutches?
I have built many of these and hardly ever have I had to find a thicker or thinner snap ring. You should be fine to reuse the snap rings that came out of the trans. Good luck!
alright thanks for the info. yea i wasnt really sure what i was getting myself into. i have a pretty good understanding of things after going through all of this. hopefully it works when i get it all done. and if it doesnt at least i learned something and i can give it another shot
i was also wondering if i should soak the clutch packs in tranny oil before i put them in. i know they say to do it in motorcycles but i wasnt sure about trucks. also what tranny fluid would you guys recommend?
Soaking the clutches is a sign of a good builder, it can only help. I have seen plenty of builders install dry with no noticeable problems, with the clutches wet it will be harder to rattle the clutch drums down onto the splines, but if you have got this far it wont be a big deal.
As far as the fluid goes I would just use the normal mercon v.
i am finally almost done with this stupid thing. I got a transgo shift kit and when i was installing the new springs i noticed that a few of my valves were sticking. Should i just get new ones or can i use something to polish em up to make them not stick?
Pull the valves out and put them in your drill to spin them and hit them with some fine emory cloth, for the bore I use a set of engine oil passage bushes, they fit on the drill too so you can spin them in the bore.

Im in the middle of an e4od with all 4r100 internals rebuild. Form everything i have read and watched soaking the clutches for 15 to 20 minutes prior to stack heights measurements is the proper procedure. Would it be to much to ask for you to post the stack height clearence spec from your book that is something I haven't found yet. Thanks and happy building
