This seems to be a good list to go by if you happen to have your carb identification. Oddly, they don't have mine listed, D8PE-APA.

It's a 79. I shouldn't have any vacuum leaks as I replaced all the tubing from the start because I did have some leaks and that remidied that. Maybe it's time just to upgrade the carb!

Guess it depends on your definition of upgrade. A warped carb base or spacer might allow for vacuum leak. Mechanic's vacuum gauge is real useful in tuning carbs and engine diagnostics.

Sent from my iPhone using IB AutoGroup
I did use a vacuum gauge after change it all and attempting to tune the carb. Which it did run good for a bit. Now it's not. I was at 19 on vacuum.

A new carburettor is often not such a bad idea. You can generally pick up a used 2bbl Holley in decent enough condition for about the same as rebuilding and refurbishing the old one.

Alternatively, you can go all out and convert it to 4bbl with a new manifold and a Holley 600. The 600 will work great on pretty much any engine, and your 351M will benefit greatly. You should be able to find a used 4bbl manifold and carburettor for a reasonable sum.

One thing I tend to do with used carbs, Holley's in particular, is fit factory spec jets into them if they are not already so equipped. Holley sets the things up pretty decently to start with and its always easier to throw $20 worth of parts into it to get it back to a 'known good' setting than trying to figure out the previous owners mistakes one by one.

A classic example of this is a 351 Cleveland I had - it had a Holley 600 and it ran really strongly at full throttle, but had a lightening quick engagement and would bog in the lower rpm badly. I opened it up and found it was about 10 jet sizes too rich in the primaries, power valve was too early, and the vacuum pod spring was waaaay out - I fixed all that and it was like a new carburettor again with great driveability and nice, linear, usable power. Better mileage, too!

If you need help with anything specific or a combination for your 351M give me a message, I'm happy to help.

Can anyone tell me if this would affect how the truck is running wish my gues it does and if this is a replaceable part on the carb. It's on the passenger side, a port that had a vacuum hose on the little round thing broke off. Must have got brittle. Hopefully this pic is good enough to tell what that this is called. Thank you!

Yes that would have an affect it is an uncontrolled vacuum leak. It is called a choke pull down.

Thank you very much. Didn't have a clue what it was called. I hope it's a replaceable part and I'll just swap it out. Do you know what that part specifically does?

It assists in pulling the choke off once the engine starts. I believe these were used when a pull down piston in the choke housing was not used.

Technically it is a "choke pull off" (not pull down).
