I rebuilt the engine, and now I've got it together, however I'm having a problem with it spewing fuel out the top of the carb?! Help! What is the problem? Do I have something routed wrong? A vacuum line maybe?
Carb float could be stuck down(open). Try tapping on carb body with screwdriver or something. If that doesn't work, you'll have to open it up, may be dirt or something in float valve seat keeping it from closing. Maybe the float is gas logged and won't float.
Just pull the top of the carb off, take the needle out of the seat if it didn't come out with the top, and look down inside for any kind of dirt or something sitting in the bottom. Do you have a fuel filter installed, factory or aftermarket?
Yes the fuel filter is installed, just bought a stock replacement from Autozone. I'll try doing that...I'm kind of weary of pulling a carb apart. I've done it before and it didn't work right...
Okay, so I rebuilt the carb and it worked fine. I took it up to the local garage to get some wiring done on it, and they said its spewing out again. Should I just buy a rebuilt carb, and hope that fixes it?
Did you find anything in the carb when you took it apart? If there were lots of brown rust flakes in the bottom of the carb, you may have a gas tank problem.
It sounds like the needle/float assembly is taking a fit and sticking open. If you get tired of messing with it, you could try a new carb. I was just afraid if it was dirt, that you were just going to fill up the new carb with dirt, and it would start doing the same thing.
There is the slim chance there is something wrong with the fuel pump, and it has too much pressure. But this is a very rare occurance.
Since this has happened twice, I'm kind of wondering if there is dirt in the lines. The truck sat 2 years before I got it and rebuilt it. Maybe I need to run some cleaner through it?
There is no substitute for dropping the gas tank and cleaning it out. You can take it somewhere to get it steamed, or you might want to look at a new one. There is a 99% chance yours is rusted on the top where it lays against the crossmember. They all do it, and you will notice it if you ever fill the tank full.
Take the fuel filter off and dump it out on a clean surface, and see if there is a lot of foreign material coming out.
I would try to disconnect the lines from each side (the tank and the fuel pump) and try to flush them clean with air or something. Then do the same for the line from the fuel pump and the carb. You might also want to look into new tanks cause they are prollly full of crap.
