Ross, when I installed new bearings on my spindles, I used a feeler gauge and shimmed accordingly for a solid fit. Could that be the difference between tight and loose?
I work for a bearing manufacturer. We're talking about taper roller bearings. They are installed, they are then adjusted for proper preload and that's it. That's the adjustment procedure. (setting proper preload is the key to taper
bearing longevity...... that and quality of materials & manufacture)
Usually, the spindle bolt and spindle bushings, AKA kingpins and bushings, are worn. There is no real way make sure you get grease into those bearings. Remove the weight from the spindle assembly, rotate while greasing may help.
My SWAG is a bit more caster might eliminate the wander. Also check the preload on the gearbox to ascertain it is not too tight.
1949 F3: the manual lists the # 1 cause of "wander" as 'tight spindle bearings'. Can they be adjusted or just replaced?
Thanks,
On older trucks I wouldn't say that this is the #1 cause. I think worn out steering boxes would be #1 on older trucks. You should have somebody turn the steering wheel back and forth for you while you watch all your steering components for play. If one moves and the next one it is attached to does not that is not correct. Also don't assume that because you have found one problem that there are not others. Also watch for movement at the spring shackles, both upper and lower bushing and front and rear on the front axle.
