Hello all,
At this time I have a pull behind tt and am pulling with my 2014 f150. I just placed an order for a 2017 350, srw, 6.2, cc, 4x4, sb, with a 4.30 and 5th wheel prep.. So here is where I am getting confused. The brochure says this set up will pull 15,700 5th wheel. It also says with a max gvwr of 10,900 my payload should be 4080. So with all that said what kind of tongue weight can I reasonably look at if I move up to a 5th wheel. I can't find a good answer anywhere? Thanks
The trim line will affect payload, as the higher lines add more "stuff" which subtracts from payload. The 4080 number was probably based on a single 150lb driver and a tank of gas in a lower trim model. The real number will be on the yellow sticker in the driver's door.
If you haven't found it yet, go check out fifth wheel street (RV Safety|RV Towing Calculator|Tow Ratings|GCWR). Lots of good data there as it relates to towing. They have real world estimates for all the brands.
Fifth wheel pin weight usually runs 18-20% of gvwr of the trailer. So if you get a 5er that has a gvwr of 13k you could reasonably expect a pin weight of 2600 lbs by the time you put all your stuff in. To find how much payload you have left on truck load it up with the people and gear ypou would have in it to go camping fill it with fuel and weigh truck. Subtract that from gvwr of truck. That's your available payload. So if your truck has a gvwr of 10900 guessing your truck will weigh close to 8k ready to go that leaves you with a 2900 payload. An f350 should have netted you a higher gvwr than 10900 usually they are 11300 but I think you have to order that option.

GVWR for your truck with 18" wheels and A/S tires is indeed 10,900 lbs. However, it's 11,300 lbs with 18" wheels and AT tires or 20" wheels.
Which wheels and tires do you have?
The 4,080 lb. maximum payload spec is not absolute. It's based on a base model (an XL?) with no options and no driver or passengers. Here's Ford's definition:
Load rating represents maximum allowable weight of people, cargo and body equipment and is reduced by optional equipment weight.
The corresponding maximum payload spec for your truck with the 11,300 lb. GVWR is 4,470 lbs. Using our truck as an example, the maximum payload spec is 4,200 lbs. As built, it's 3,968 lbs.
