This may have been posted before however I came across this video again and thought it was time I did this quick addition to my tailgate. I am usually pretty good about locking my tailgate but there have been times when I forget and went back later to lock it (or check that it was locked).
I got the Mc Gard #76029 tail gate lock from Amazon for $20 . I keep the key in the wheel lock case . More expensive than a hose clamp but it looks stock .
I've been driving pickups since 1981 and have driven untold hundreds of thousands of miles from Maine to Mobile and Clarksburg to Key West and not once have I ever seen any evidence of someone attempting to steal my tailgate. And I know no one who has ever had this happen to him/her. So really, I have to ask- just how big a problem is tailgate theft?
Construction dude a couple blocks from here has a '16 Tacoma. Same setup on the tailgate as Ford--let it down half way and pull the right side out, then go right with the whole thing. Well, he still has that Taco, but no tailgate.
Even at the $20 fancy pants price, locking it makes sense.
Okay, I never thought about tailgate theft or knew they were so expensive to replace. Found a hose clamp in the the tool shed and put it on. What a clever fix. Is the lock really effective or is it easy to defeat? I see how this would thwart an opportunistic theft...thanks for the tip.

I had a tailgate stolen off my last truck. It's a pretty serious problem in the super duty world with tailgates being easily swapped from 99 to 16 model years.

What most people don't realize is with the 99-07 Super Duty trucks. The tailgate is the same as the 97-03/04 F-150 Heritage trucks. And as rust becomes more of an issue on a truck the higher the risk is of it getting stolen if your gate is in pristine condition.
