This is what i discovered: After i sprayed some lube on the tailgate hinges, i opened and closed the tailgate several times to work the lube in. After about 7-8 times of doing this the tailgate locked itself. Hmmm, i had to get my key to unlock it.
So, being really curious, i repeatedly opened and shut the tailgate again, and sure enough it locked itself again! After I unlocked it, I decided to count the repetitions. Usually after the 8th time it locks itself. Can ANYONE else confirm this, or do i have a freak tailgate here?
I think mine locks sooner...I could swear I didn't lock it and then the next time I go to get in it....its locked...don't know if its my mind or tailgate
Mine did that for about 2 years. After the 3rd time in to the dealer, they seemed to have stopped it from happening. I think they mentioned there was a bulletin out for the problem.
I wish I had that problem. I've got the opposite. Mine won't lock at all for some reason. It'd be nice to know that the four wheeler is safe locked up inside the bed when I'm in town.
Here's an update to my tailgate problem. I took my truck into the dealer for a couple of minor warranty repairs and i mentioned to the service person that my tailgate locked on it's own every now and then.
I also told him that it didn't really bother me and all i wanted them to really check was the corrosion that was on the positive cable where it connected to the starter.
They replaced the entire cable that ran from the battery to the starter and while they had my truck they R/R (removed & replaced) the center latch mechanism on the tailgate. Cool....everything seems to be OK.
Below is the TSB on the tailgate issue.
Make: FORD
Model: F150

Summary Description:
TAILGATE LOCKING BY ITSELF WHEN SLAMMED SHUT OR WHEN THE VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN OVER ROUGH ROADS. *TT
Heh, I forgot completely about this posting. Know how I fixed my problem? Trade the truck back in LOL. What a lemon that was. But I will say, after they did whatever work was in that TSB, it seemed fine after that.
