do you have a welding machine and a cutting torch. i had an 84 bII and all i did was unbolt the cat and cut the tailpipe off.then i unbolted the muffler from the cat and cut the flange off and grinded it smooth. i had an old flowmaster lying around with a little bit of pipe on the inlet tube, so i cut it straight grinded it also and welded the flange to the flowmaster. then i bolted the flow onto the y pipe without the cat and welded a hanger. i also left the tailpipe off. it sounded mean and aggressive. deep like a v8. it sounded fast even though it was not.if you want to here your friends talk inside cruising or you have emmissions testing then you can just leave the cat on there. i tried the flow with the cat and it sounded good and mellow but i lived in the country and i wanded people to hear me coming.
yeah ive been driving it this week with no muffler. its pretty loud. more annoying thatn my trans am but not as loud at WOT. i need a muffler on there cause i get more attn than i want in that thing
Heck yeah, if you can get a Flowmaster, or are lucky enough to have one lying around use a quality muffler. But if you are working on a limited budget like me a Cherry Bomb works well. The exaust gas does however need to be routed out from under the enclosed portions of the truck. Both leagaly, and for your personal comfort and saftey. That exaust smell from a 2.9 is terrible, even more so with out a cat. Mine has hollow cats, so I know.
i never really smelled any exhaust i always had my window open and the exit pipes that were still on the flow almost touched the axle. but they ended there.
It's all about personal preferance. If I had a truck instead of a suv I'd do the same thing only I'd add an echo chamber. I just don't want to give carbon-monoxide a chance in to get in the cab, especialy when my daughter is riding with me. But the free flow under the chassis Flowmaster has to sound awsome. This is my first vehicle to not have Flowmasters, aside from the CRX "but that was a buisness deal". And I miss them. I plan to put a dual Flowmaster set up on the wife's 2002 Taurus SES Sport. It should compliment the K&N filter, and the JET performance chip. All said and done it should push 20-25, over the stock 200hp.
Well anyways good luck with it, and I hope you are happy with what ever the results.
I've got a stock muffler and tailpipe that is almost brand new. I bought the B2 cheap because the dude blew it up. Anyways, it is up in the loft in the garage and I'll take 50 bucks for it plus shipping. If your interested let me know.
man i duno about where you all live but a stock tail pipe for my b II cost me like 16.99 and that was for a walker pipe and the mufler was like 11.99 for a thrush turbo all i had to do was spend 3 bucks for a pice of pipe to be bend for that angle bent pice .for the mufler up to the tail. i duno about routing the pipe out the side infront of the wheel i tried that on my 88 and it was like i almost had to either take the cat off or find a mufler off a lawnmower .. there isent much room to work with being that short wheel base . im not saying it cant be done but i couldent do it ..i duno if some came with single cats mine is a duel . i needed like amost a 10 in mufler and i had played he#$ trying to find one but dyno max makes thoes bullet muflers you can get them as short as 8 inches . and about running the pipe out the side its like you almost have to run a 90* angle mabye a bit more than 90 .. i duno if im right or not but thats the problems i had ran into . have fun
Mine had two cats also and I managed to fit a 12 inch muffler between the cats and the tail pipe. With minor cutting of the pre bent pipe. I wish I had known about the 10 inch first. But the 12 inch will work fine if used as an out the side set up. With a nice tip it'll look good too.
