I started up my truck this weekend and it sounds like it needs a new muffler and new tailpipe and all. should i just take it to meineke and get whatever they have or is there a better choice?
Don't know what year you have. I had a shop custom bend a tailpipe to replace my rear resonator/pipe, cost $40.
If you're looking for "performance-louder", then you could go with a Cat Back system, but that could be more costly than stock, or you could see if your place has a performance muffler.
You could check here http://www.a-1performance.com/ to see what's available. There are specialty shops too, but this is all the info I have.
If you have a "mills" Fleet Farm in your area they carry the stock replacement tail pipe for $45.00. I went that route and spent $18.00 on a Cherry Bomb 12 inch glasspack. It fit great and sounds good. It is a little loud but not annoying, has good back pressure also. You will also need either a mig welder or 2 pipe clamps. The muffler shop wanted $250 for the repair. I did it good for under $70.
thanks. sorry about not specifying what year. i thought it was in my sig. its a 87 4x4.
i dropped it off at meineke and told them to give me an estimate so we shall see.
At least your cat is still good if you don't mind cheap fixes that work make ur own from auto zone and run it out in front of the rear wheel. Just past the bolt together conection after the cat set-up cut the pipe and put a 2 inch dia. Cherry Bmb, a 12 inch long fits best, then buy a pre bent elbow and a couple of 2 inch dia. segments of pipe and run it out like the 97 F-150's. Once you get the tail pipe positioned where you want it clamp every thing and put at least two mounting brackets. The Cherry Bomb will have to be expanded at least 1/8 of an inch on the inlet side to fit on the pipe coming out of the cat conection. The muffler cost @ $18, the pipe and fittings @ $10 and brackets are $3 each. For the money saved you could even put a fancy chrome tip as an accent. I did this, except I Was lucky and found a pre-bent tail pipe for by B2 so mine comes out the stock location and uses the stock hangers. If you have any questions about this just ask it's cheap but works well if done properly, and anybody with a cresent wrench can do it.
i just might try this. i am guessing i need an exhaust cutter to take the stock pipes off? and how do i expand the cherry bomb?

AutoZone has both tools in their tool loan program you pay for the tool as a security deposit and recive the money back after you return it. If you put it on a credit card you will never know that you were charged. The pipe cutter is easy to use, it is a chain with rolling cutting blades on it that has two handles, it will cut the pipe in about 20-30 seconds. The pipe expander is, self explanitory, but due to the heavier guage metal it may take a breaker bar, instead of just a wrench. I actually just had the guy behind the counter help me and we expanded it in the store when I bought the Cherry Bomb, just carry the peice that you cut off as a reference. Hope you have a second vehicle or it will be a loud ride. Make sure you don't remove the cat, and try to drive it. With no back pressure your valves that have probably seen about 100,000 miles will give out. Any trouble shooting you need I will be happy to help with.
ok i just went to autozone.com and it says i have to order the cherry bomb. i will do that.
as far as the pipes i need - what exactly do i need? I dont have the truck here so i cant go out and look at it... just wondering the length (i assume 90 deg ? , etc. thanks!
The length is dependant on your placement of the tip, but i would recomend three sections of 12 inches, to get you past the outer perimeter of the body and one 90 degree elbow. The glasspack has an angle to it also, the angle should be enough to clear the frame when turned properly. It is 2-3 inches offset from the inlet to the outlet acomplished by bends from the factory, use this to your benifit. The rest is up to your imagination and fabrication skills. to achive the tightest fit against the frame i would use a 2 inch u-bolt through the frame with a little high temp rubber where metal on metal contact is present, an old radiator hose works well. Any thing else just ask. As for the part numbers you will have to chec the decriptions and compare them to the ones I decribed I ll try to shoot you a diagram of what i am explaining.
should i get that bendable tailpipe that ive seen at auto stores?
just so i understand:
cut the pip off after the car. attach 1 12" 2"diam pipe to that. then connect the muffler to that, then another 12" pipe. then connect the 90 deg bend to that and then another 12" pipe?
After the cat, directly into the cherry bomb, then just enough pipe to place the tip in front of the wheel well minus the length of the elbow. Add the elbow and pipe to get the pipe out from under the chassis. and you are done.
The bendable pipe is an option but it is not as durable, and it rust quicker. And I just mentioned the 12" segments cause that is what They sold in the store and you dont need much pipe. The segments also slip together with pre expanded joints. with the diagram you can figgure out your own best solution for ordering parts. You can probably perfect my idea and post the end result to help any body else facing a wallet rape buy a muffler shop. I have not done the exact proceedure I am explaining to you, cause I had a pre-bent tail pipe available for only 45 dollars, which I can not find on line. And the store I bought it from is in a limited area around WI. So I only had to do the muffler and a small spacer to the stock part. But I have done a full exaust on a Honda CRX with nothing more than the parts purchaced from AutoZone, and it turned out very nice for a under 50 dollar fix, even put a big tip on it. The kid I sold it to loved the ( custom ) exaust, I did not have the heart to tell him how it was built.
